Title: 2zz oil cooler
Post by: Dudi on September 6, 2018, 19:22
Anyone running a good oil cooler setup for a 2zz?

Doing some research and what I'm seeing is the MWR one is inadequate and something like a Mocal 13 row cooler with 10AN fittings mentioned.

What's the consensus on this?

I took the plunge and bought the pieces for small 13-row cooler... I went with this kind of setup:

Should be in next week along with pressure/temp gauges, so I'll have more data where I'm at.

This kind of size and position is very good... it sits away from engine directly on the duct with full width. I'll see how are the temperatures, if needed I'll also modify the duct to close bottom/top air overflow... but I expect it should be substantially better than no cooler! :)

Thanks for the response inside.

I'm looking to build my own kit as well, any idea on the lengths of the hoses necessary?

I got this measurements from somewhere: 71 cm (inlet), 81 cm (outlet).

I've bought 2m of braided hose, and will just let it be cut to while installing... should be enough length.

Building your kit is probably best if you want good fit... the only problem with this position is that if you need bigger cooler, it won't fit (nicely). I'll have test fit over weekend and will make a photo or two...

I'm happy to let you be the guinea pig  :)

Picture updates would be perfect, thank you.

This is how it looks on test fitting bracket/cooler on the right-side vent:

The tank filter/ccv line will probably be removed as it is getting in the way a bit.

This is as far as I've went, next should be the install in a week or two. :)

The only two solutions that I found to be able to keep my oil temperatures down on track were a large cooler and fan mounted under the rear bumper or an oil cooler mounted in the front of the car.

My current setup an oil cooler mounter in front. I figured if it was working for lotus it will work for me.

Even when my car was NA I still had high track oil temperatures in the summer.

My car is currently a turbo 2zz making about 280hp.

Your car sounds a bit special, do you have a build thread?

Do you think an oil cooler pretty much filling the side intake is inadequate for an NA 2ZZ? The front cooler would need quite a lot of modifying and also it'd block the radiator right?
