My 2 "Eric" has started burning oil, this has just started overnight. Blue smoke from exhaust after "overrun", say after coasting or on accelerating. I have been topping up with semi-synthetic. Now, I have recently bought some fully synthetic oil and a new filter with a view to changing the filter and filling with the good quality stuff I have bought. Am I too late? Is the engine Kaput, rings seized in grooves or whatever. The engine has done 123k and still goes like SHoneT. The car is due it's MOT within the week. Will it fail because OTT emissions? Any thoughts, air filter, PCV problem, all contributions gratefully accepted.
If it's on the over run it could just be PCV related, new valves are a cheap replacement, also look for any splits in the hoses which connect the PCV valve to the intake side.

My car is on 177k miles, its a known issue with a flaw with the pistons unless you have a very late car its going to burn oil, only if its just run on fully synthetic does it usually stop the consumption.
My recommendation is to keep an eye on the oil level and just keep topping it up and enjoy the car.
A puff of blue smoke after the over-run is often the PCV.
You can take it out and inspect it and think it's working fine, but it relies on spring tension to do its job properly, so they simply die after a while.
It is less likely to be stuck rings (though possible) as that syndrome tens to appear slowly, rather than over night. Also many oil-burners that have stuck rings don't blow blue smoke!! AND they sail through MOT as the oil gets used as fuel.
Change PCV as suggested above its cheap easy and should be done every now and then maybe 30k miles
I'm pretty sure that Dean at Rutland MR 2 has them in stock. (new ones).
You can also get OEM ones from the Toyota genuine parts shop on flea bay
Thanks all for the usual great response. I will go down the paulj route, check the PCV hose for damage, and replace the PCV valve [I do know now where the PCV valve is located having looked it up on Youtube]. And if when I change the oil to fully synthetic, together with a new filter this prevents the blue smoke issue, then I will be happy, after all oil is fairly cheap even when the consumption OTT. I will let you know regarding any improvement.
Really watch out and watch the level very closely after changing to fully synth!!!
It may sound like it would be 'better'... but better oil also means moves easier and easier to blow past the rings... and greater consumption! I blew an MR2 engine within of a week from changing to castrol edge once. I had oil burn before, at a reasonable rate, but not the whole lot in a week.
Really I should have stuck with semi-synth and gone up a grade (10W-40) if anything.
I have taken note of that frogger, I have noticed in the recent past that if the oil level shows "just on" the low level of the dip stick, then the blue smoke emitted is a lot less or zero, making me think the dip stick is too short? idea folks!!! what is the effective O/A dip length of the 2's dipstick, mine is 730mm [28and3/4 inches], also, as the MOT is due checked mileage/oil for 12 months :- 2125 miles per annum, easy calculation used 10 pints=212.5 per pint, not good, but better than I thought given the heavy right foot he has been given.
I'll humour you and measure a dipstick ::) ..... yep same as yours!! Honest - I had one on the bench and I just measured it.
The next bit, you won't like:
As oil level drops, crankcase vapour pressure drops... less oil is splashed on the cylinder walls by the motion of the crankshaft. Less oil goes past the rings. Mind you a bit of hard cornering with the oil that low will result in damaged rod bearings. Best not to let it get below halfway on the dipstick.
Basically, you're doing a litre/500 miles.
That, I'm afraid is oil control rings no longer controlling oil. - Probably plus a bad PCV.
If it were mine, I'd still replace the PCV.
The engine will run happily burning oil at that rate for years.
The only 'cure' is a rebuild, I'm afraid. but it's not a requirement by any means.

I think I have found someone with a stranger sense of humour than me :o
Measuring dipsticks :notworthy: above and beyond.
All this talk of dipsticks just makes me think of Rosco P Coltrane.

Thanks for that Carolyn, I'll still go down the PCV route, you never know. Oh, and thanks also to Tree and Midwife for their valuable comments, when you have been around vehicles as long as me you will know there are a lot of dipsticks around, we have located yet another two. Ha Ha!
Ordered a PVC Valve from Feilda Auto Spares [Amazon]on 14 Sep, came today 28 Sep. £9.30 delivered. Going on the North East jaunt Sunday, so not going to mess about with Eric before the run out. I will replace the old PVC valve after the meet and see what improvement there is, if any, also checking the vacuum hose for leaks!

Although I understand your reasoning for not making changes prior to the drive, it's an easy, less than half hour job and the run might do it good?

I hear what you say Call the midlife! I have done many half hour jobs which have run into the next day. Ain't going to chance missing what could possibly be the equivalent to the "Great North Run" in terms of MR2's. "BE THERE", see you tomorrow, Smokey.

I'd be thinking the same, most of my half hour jobs extend to weeks/months ;)
Well I managed to get a half hour spare to fix the new PCV valve[Call the midwife's prediction] not a bad estimate, but I overran because the vac pipe needed cutting back beyond a split! check and top up the oil, getting dark, put my tools away knowing my bro and I would be going out to lunch today,[ we go out most Tuesdays and Fridays to various Mcdonalds in the area, Large fries and large Cappuccinos each] I thought this would be a good shake down after its major works. I also discovered a new way of body protection, we stopped at Diner 51, mug of tea, £1 free refills. saw a small puddle under his rear end, [the car that had parked there before us must have made it] but just in case had a look under his rear bonnet and yes I had not replaced the oil cap! Lucky me? oil cap still where I put it. Another day in MR2 land.
