Title: Tracking help please
Post by: Anonymous on March 18, 2005, 11:56
I have noticed that the inside edges of my front tryes have worn away and I assume this is a problem with tracking. My '2 is going for a service next week so I asked them to check this out for me. They told me that their tracking system cost £100! Apparently it is a lot more thorough that what you would normally get and check camber and other such things and takes an hour and a half to carry out.

Has anyone else had experience of this? I was assuming a charge more like £20!

Any comments appreciated.

James

We recently had the Celica serviced and I complained about braking hard pulling to the left (the same as the 2).  They said they had looked at it, but couldnt find anything wrong.

I could have a full laser tracking for £70.  So looks like its right (well, its actually a rip off).  Apparently they dont do it, they get someone in to do it.

Just done a quick search and it appears that lots of MR2s suffer the same issue and it is to do with negative camber and the way the car is set up. Not a problem then - I'll definitely avoid the cost.

Hi Mate,

I'm sure others will comment - but it goes something like this:

The MR2 front end is set up for cornering as such the camber compared to a normal saloon means that running in a stright line the tyres run on the inside edge (ie. camber in) to improve cornering ability.

Thus the inside edges wear much quicker, you should expect anything from 12 - 20 k per set, depending on your driving style.

Tracking costs from Toyota, normally is approxiamtely £50 (had mine done twice, just precautionary when my first set wore out).

£100, sounds a little steep ! ring some other Toyota Dealerships.  They are lazer aligned and you get some nice before and after graphics.

Anyway, if the above tally's with your useage, etc, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about - as for future tyre choice, well do a search, there are plenty of opinions available on the forum.

Good luck and welcome.

Cheers
