Title: Metallic squeal, brake pads checked
Post by: delhusband on October 16, 2018, 18:49
Started getting faint metallic squeal, intermittent. Seems more pronounced when steering right. Sure it's coming from front n/s. During recent service mentioned this (assumed pads had worn and squeal was wear indicator). Mechanic said plenty meat left on pads. What's likely here, sticky caliper? Could a loose dust shield cause this too? I could take it back in, but just wondering if there's anything i could check before hand - never attempted opening a caliper up, but willing and eager to give it a go, got a spray can of brake cleaner, could use reccommendation on any lub/grease products for pads, not sure how much effort for complete novice to look at checking slider bolts etc. - pointers to good threads, and any advice (even if it's "take it to the garage") appreciated.

Have you considered the wheel bearings?

Make sure the dust shield on the back of the disks are intact. They corrode, become weak then bend catching on the back of the disk.

I'll have a £1 on dust shields.

£2 on there being a small stone trapped between disc and sheild.

Thanks for responses. Posted last message at service station, just home. The noise isn't a constant squeal, it's rythmic. sounds like contact being made at a point of rotation. Quick dab of brake pedal at speed and noise goes; but I'll check for loose dust guard anyway. Mentioning bearings, coincidentally I'm getting creak/groan when turning (stationary, low speed), but I'd wondered if that noise might have been related to rack or top mounts?

Back on topic, ardent has made a good suggestion with stones.  Until you've suffered one you don't realise the absolute din of noise a small stone can make!

PS. For those of you still reading the age related items on this post, we don't mean kidney stones.

If its rhythmic, maybe your disc is warped. If you haven't got a dial gauge nows the opportunity to need one and check runout on the disc.
