I know that many of us have had trouble with the rear brakes, but I can't find one quite like mine...
She failed her MOT on the handbrake (as usual) the off side was below 50%, and the nearside was binding.
I have stripped and re built the calipers, replaced the pads etc.
Everything seems ok until I put the wheels back on.
The nearside still binds, and the offside is useless.
I think the offside cable is seized, so I'm thinking of replacing it. I have a spare nearside cable anyway, so I'll probably do the pair.
Can anyone think of anything else it could be?
lets start at the cheap end.
Is the cable seized?
If you disconnect the cables and still binds something not right at all.
I don't think the cables are right. I'm changing them today.
I think.i need to do the calipers again though.
I'm getting fed up buying refurbished ones every year or two, so I'm going to get some originals from my local Mr T, and cry into my beer for a couple of days about the price...
SWMBO thinks it's time for me to get a new car!!! We had a little chat about that last night.

First off I know @Carolyn (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=22891) has never had a set of calipers that couldn't be saved but I have found it's just too much hassle to keep mucking about with them and just bought brand spanking new myself.
Second does SWMBO pay for the car?
If not then she should leave well alone.
HWMBO went to a Jimmy Choo sample sale the other day and came back with 2 pairs of silly heels that will get worn once a year but it's none of my business what she does with her money.

That seems excessive! Do you leave the car parked up for long periods with the handbrake on?
Thank you Scott, I must agree especially as I have been buying her cars for years now. Speaking to the guy at Mr T, he agrees that there aren't any cars out there that come close for smiles per pound value, and that the GT86 is a good 15 grand car, but not for 25 grand (he also reckons they are slower than a '2).
James, no it's a daily driver.
I had a good news/bad news day today...
The nearside cable was seized "on", and the offside cable was seized "off". The handbrake hasn't been good for ages now, but I've been trying to overcome it with the adjuster at the front. D'oh!!
The bad news is, it meant I had to change both cables today, could have been worse, took me about 4 hours total, but between that and servicing the calipers, it seems to have done the job (oh, and new pads).
I can't get the re-test done until Monday, so I'll know for sure then...
I think I have been blaming calipers for a long time when the cables were actually knackered...
Pleased you sorted your brakes out, but you need to have a word with the Toyota parts man, He's wrong about the 2 being quicker than the GT86, I have both and I must say, the 86 is a quicker car.

Hmmmm, I test drove the 86 when they first came out, I thought the 2 was a little faster. Mind you, nice for you to have the choice of driving both.
Depends what he meant by quicker, I've spoken to owners of both and the general opinion is the 2 is the more lively and nimble of the pair in standard form. You've really got to thrash the boxer to get the same performance as the 2 and it's less nimble in the corners.
That said, I'd have one if I had the money.

I would say the 86 is quicker and the 2 is more fun!
The 86 actually has a heavier steering feel which surprised me.
The 86 always gets criticism for being slow but I think thats a bit unfair. Having said that, mine goes in for some tuning work tomorrow!
It is nice to have a car that has lots of options still available!
(Glad your brakes are fixed!).

What are you having done?
Cosworth supercharger?
Ha, no, this is my daily, I dont want 2 temperamental cars!
New exhaust header and overpipe, airfilter and remap on the rolling road.
Lower final drive ratio too.
Should transform the mid range torque.....

So would that Cosworth supercharger ;)
Had her back in today for a retest, sailed through.
Only cost me a calipers rebuild (DIY), new pads and new cables both sides. As well as several hours swearing about idiot designers, and the skin on the back of a few knuckles.
Still, nice to.know I can still contort into some of those positions at my age :D
