Hi, my 2zz conversion is complete but I think it still needs some additional tuning. On cold start it's idle is so rough for about 20 secs then it levels out. In addition, it seems to be making a really strong smell of petrol. Is the engine running too rich?

Out of my league, but will open the conversation with,
how are your fuel trims?
Stock (for the engine) ecu?
Standalone ecu?
It's a standalone but I've stage 2 cams which will naturally give a rough idle, which is why you set the idle to about 1000rpm. But this just seems to be of a cold start. Once it's up to temp it's fine. Perhaps I didn't set the idle parameters enough. The problem is you use the current ambient temp when doing it, but the temp has dropped considerably in the last week or so. I'll figure it out I'm sure!

O2 sensors...?

Are you tunning this yourself?
@mikek (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=22649) has standalone with cams perhaps he can shed some light.
I don't think it's anything to do with the O2 sensors, and no mate, me and my friend are tuning it. He is a race car tuner but this is something new to him.

My car idles at just under 1200 rpm. Still sounds a little lumpy when it first starts. Before the standalone it was all over the place. I am running a wideband instead of the O2 sensors.
Describe lumpy mate, mine chugs alive, then idles at around 400rpm for about 10 to 20 seconds, then jumps up to 1000rpm and thats usually it. But on occasion it has just cut out after start up.

It's not like that. Never drops below 1000 rpm. More hunting for the extra revs. Doesn't last much longer than about 30 seconds.
I think I have mine running way too rich

I suppose if he tunes race cars then the finer points of idle aren't too important.
What ECU is fitted?
It's an Adaptronic M2000 modular ECU

A different choice don't think I know anyone who has one so copying someone else's setting won't be an option.
Yeah, it was recommended to me as a new too class ecu which is also future proofed

Idle tuning isn't as simple as setting an rpm and that's it.
There's a fair few parameters (idle valve duty cycle, coolant temp compensation, etc) but idle isn't the only thing affecting the idling rpms.
Fueling plays a big part.
Luckily it's quite easy to adjust if you have access to the laptop

What does that mean? "New class'?

Also, there is a specific table after-start fueling and ignition. That sounds like it may be your issue.

Sorry, didn't mean new class lol it typed wrong, it was meant to say a new type of ecu

It's going back in this Thursday for some fine tuning, hopefully we can work it out
