Title: HELP - PRE CATS!
Post by: Anonymous on March 21, 2005, 17:08
Hi there,

I've never posted anything before but have found reading your posts very interesting! I finally joined the club today as I've started to become a bit worried about my little car....

She's a 2001 Y reg and just gone over 35k. Now I'm a little concerned abouts the pre-cats, she has been serviced and MOT'd but not by a Toyota garage and is now out of warrenty. So if something did happen to her I wouldn't have a leg to stand on with regards to Toyota.

I read on here a little while ago, that you had a manual of explaining how to clean out your pre-cats, as I was going to pass it onto my mechanic who will hopefully be able to do these at not such a high cost of garage. Does anyone have a copy of this thread?

Now this little problem is making me consider whether to change the car or not.......I'm not mechanically minded and wouldn't have a clue if she had a major problem and would probabaly get ripped off by someone!

I could really do with some advice!!!

Please help.

Misspie

Don't worry, there's almost no chance there's anything wrong with your car, we've just talked about it on here a lot, it makes it seem like more of a  problem than it really is.

There are thousands and thousands and thousands of MR2s and from what I can see, tens of pre-cat failures.

The article written by Grant is here -  m http://www.mr2roc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=44840#44840 (http://www.mr2roc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=44840#44840) m

I'm not sure what a garage would charge, but they will probably see it as a large job, your best bet is to find a fellow club member in your are who has the knowledge to do this for you - will hopefully be cheaper too!

Grant's article is brilliant , the only thing not included is a dictionary of useful swearwords to use when you break a bolt or get a knuckle scraping.
I finally did mine last week and although it doesn't feel any different, the little worry at the back of my mind has completely gone now and its full-on enjoyment of the 2. I'd post pics of my precats, but I don't know how to attach them here.

So is there anyone that lives near Southampton that can help a poor girl who hasn't got a clue?

I seem to remember there being a pre-cat cutting meet last year, maybe a few of you could get together and strip them together   s8) 8) s8)

Girls.. stripping.. I'm there!

Oh.. pre cats..   s:wink:  s:wink:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Sorry, couldn't resist..

I've not done mine yet, so I'd hate to offer my services, but if you haven't found anyone to do yours before I've done mine (in a month or two - warranty is up next month), Lorna, I can pop down and give you a hand - you're not that far from me.

Oh and, contrary to the impression my first comments might give, I'm not an Internet weirdo, honest  s;) ;) s;)

Lorna, it's good for you to be concerned with your year and mileage. There's every chance that your precats are still intact and this would be a good time to remove them if you're so inclined.

It's hard to find professional assistance with this job, so if you're going to do it, you'll have to tackle it yourself or with a pal. I've posted some thoughts on Grant's procedure here:

The photos may not appear as the host server has been wonky of late, but eventually they'll show up. Whether you actually stave off some sort of disaster or not is always an open question with this modification, but you absolutely do get an improvement in sound and a bit of performance to boot. Good luck however you proceed.

Lorna,

I have had my precats removed by Alan Milford of AM Autos in Ringwood. He knows what he is doing, and charged me £100. Bargain !!  Ringwood is about 20 minutes from Southampton. Good Luck.
