Title: How to tell 2003 from 2004 model year
Post by: benjamino on November 7, 2018, 20:17
I believe there is a revision in 2004 that includes mostly safety upgrades. My car is registered in Jan 2004 - how would I check what actual model year it is?

Cheers - I see the revisions document that shows what changed, but most of the 2004 changes I'd have no idea by looking if mine has it not. Can the model year be derived from the chassis plate somehow?

You'd have to look at the date the revision was rolled out and your v5 to check date of first registration.
But even then you're in a grey area if the car was a late 2003 model already on stock and sold in 04.
You'd be relying on the original purchaser knowing about the revisions and making sure their new car had them.
Other than that you could try looking on mytoyota and entering your VIN number to see what comes up.

Yeah I have the date of first registration - Jan 04. As you say there's a chance it was old stock of the 2003 when it was registered though. MyToyota doesn't clarify either. Looking at the list of changes I think I'd most luck trying to see if my manifold support brackets have 4 bolts or 2. Thanks!

To be honest if it was registered Jan 04 it's an 03 car anyway so my money would be on it not having the 04 revisions.

I saw a complete list of chassis numbers arranged into years. This was based on production date.

Trouble is i cannot remember where i saw it  think it was on a Toyota site.

Both me and @mulaz (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=20470)  have 2004 cars. Think his was registered April and mine in July.

Mine has the 2004 revisions and his does not so I'm guessing the Jan 2004 one wont.

Mine was registered Feb 04 but is a 03 model. The 04 models have a much larger front under brace than the 03 models.
