Title: Car Tax
Post by: Chilli Girl on December 10, 2018, 21:57
Is it true that from 1st April 2019, the Government are sticking an additional £25 on our little cars?  What will that be £265 or thereabouts? :'(

Is that true ?
Smh
It already costs 2 X more than my big work Van that's on the road everyday, compared to the occasional weekend run out for the 2. Makes no sense....

Unless I misunderstood but I'm pretty sure I'm right.  I pay a mere £30 for my Mazda 2 and £70 for my motorbike.  Yeh, I agree it's steep!  Will seriously have to review finances next year I'm afraid. :'(

Yep another £25 a year based on emissions it's over 20 year old engine now

But in the scheme of things could be worse

Here's how much more motorists will pay based on their tax brand:

76g/km and 150g/km CO2 - +£5

151-170 g/km CO2 - +£15

171-190g/km CO2 - +£25

191-225g/km CO2 - +£40

226-255g/km CO2 - +£55

255g/km CO2 - +£65

I think for me and many other members who have their 2 as a fun second car this may tip the balance in favour of SORNing their vehicle over the winter.
I was considering this when my tax is due next year.

I totally agree Stew. I was going to sorn at the beginning of the month, and only my forgetfulness stopped me from doing it!

I must make a note of the V5 number then, when I remember to do it, I have it to hand.

As previously mentioned I use my 2 only for 6 months a year and tax it at a 6 month rate that carries a slight premium on a £/ month over the 12 month charge.
There may be some overall financial benefit in taxing for 12 months and reclaiming the "extra" 6 months when SORN ing.
IIRC there was no penalty charge when I did this a few years ago, as always check before you try/ buy.

Fortunately Foxy's tax is due before 1st April so think that'll be £240 for 12 months which I will pay as tend to enjoy using her throughout the year. Next year (if I still have her), I will be Sorning her for 6 months!

It is deeply irritating.  Especially when one considers what an inane method of assessing environmental impact this is.  Surely the annual mileage is a better indicator?  Could easily be set up now MOTs are computerised.

Anyway, I'll be paying it, 'cos an extra £25 over a year is not going to stop me enjoying my silly little car whenever I wish. :)

The only certainty about tax is its unavoidable!

To add to the madness of car taxing, we have a 2013 BMW 1 series DIESEL which we pay £0 per year for.  It was manufactured when diesel was going to save the world, how things change.  Of interest now our diesel car pays less tax than electric cars but would be stung for full eco charges when the new go low cities set their charge for entry.

I refer to my first, don't try and understand it just look big and pay it.

Besides, the increase on our MR2s is less than a  tank of fuel anyway.

I dread to think what the Audi is gonna cost!

For Banana though, I want/need her on the road... so have to stump up the cash. Simples.
Interesting idea from @Carolyn (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=22891) though, for useage.

The volumetric carrying capacity of the 2 is at best adequate, so @Treboeth (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11749) 's suggestion that @Essex2Visuvesi (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=23752) should consider buying a 2 for his son to live in is perhaps asking just a little 2 much  ;)
