Title: Engine bay noise
Post by: AndPow68 on December 14, 2018, 13:57
Hi

Over the last 3 weeks there's been an increasingly annoying chirping noise (phonetically ts ts ts ts ts ts) which seems to be coming from the rhs of the engine bay. It would appear to be around the aux belt and pulleys. When the belt is sprayed with water the chirping goes but comes back within seconds, so I'm going to replace the belt as it's an inexpensive option. Is there a preferred manufacturers brand? I have air con.

The chirping usually starts within 10 seconds after cold start up (idles at 1600rpm) and stops after about 15-20 mins into a drive/idle (around 800rpm). Pitch and volume don't change when idling, switching on air con, increasing revs, depressing clutch, or selecting / using the reverse gear. The rate of chirping increases during driving acceleration but is gets no noticeably louder then the increased engine / exhaust noise.

Aux belt and auto tensioner were replaced in July 18.
No obvious play in aux belt or pulleys  (alternator, air con, water pump, crank, tensioner, idler)
Belt is free form any obvious visual stretching or damage.
Just for reference a 6 month service was carried out last Saturday (oil change, air and oil filters and general nuts, bolts, hoses etc checks for fit and condition).

For those members with a good sense of humour there are no birds nesting in the engine bay and the sound does mysteriously goes if I turn up the radio or close the windows 😂.

If anyone has had similar experiences or advice to share, your feedback would be muchly appreciated.

Many thanks
And

The Gates belts are very good quality, if a bit stiffer to put on when new.

Have you tried some detergent on the ribbed side of the belt?  A bit of oil contamination can cause a 'chirp'.

While the belt is off, you might spin each pulley by hand again, just to make sure they're all smooth and happy.

Thanks for the Gates tip. I'll also try the detergent and hand spin the pulleys.
Cheers

I had exactly the same, aux belt looked fine but replaced it and the chirp disappeared

Mine has a similar noise which goes as the engine warms up. Going to take the belt of and check pulleys when I get back to work.

Plus 2, Gates belt fitted and noise gone. Huzzah! Now I can get back to enjoying the rattles in the cab. Thanks for your help!
