Title: Steering Wheel boss removal - suggestions please.
Post by: HFB on December 17, 2018, 22:18
I had a new boss fitted when I replaced my std steering wheel for a sector 330mm one last year.

I am now updating and have fitted a quick release system from Driftworks which works really well.

The downside it brings the wheel a lot closer to me and further away from the indicator and wiper stalks, so I have also purchased a shorter steering wheel hub. However.....

I cannot seem to remove the old hub from the splines on the steering column.

I am reluctant to re-attach the wheel and use that to pull it off, for fear of damaging/distorting the steering wheel.

I am half thinking that it is more difficult to remove at the moment due to the coldness in the garage (not freezing, but pretty cold) making everything contract and it fitting tighter to the column.......poppycock or reasonable?

Any suggestions as to a safe, effective way of taking the old boss/hub off without causing damage to anything please?

I bought a set something like this one;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/13pc-Harmonic-Crankshaft-Balance-Puller-Gear-Crank-Shaft-Steering-Pulley-Wheel-/123416413554?hash=item1cbc310572

(mine is from amtech) and it worked to get my standard wheel off easily.

If the wheel cant take a few pulls to get the boss off its got no place in a car anyhows!  it should easily have enough strength and if not  only place for it is on the wall or in the bin ;)
