Title: Ventilation canister.
Post by: Petrus on January 26, 2019, 12:52
On the belts side of the engine sits a black canister.
The tank vent connect to it as does a tube that via a solenoid connects to the inlet manifold.

As far as I can work out, it does not ´do´ anything but make the emission guys content as it makes the engine suck up any petrol fumes.

It does not weigh much so is not much of a worry but anything you take off ads lightness for free, thus....  :D

Now as I write I can see nothing that would prevent take it out.
Lead the tank vent to point downwards, same thing the rubber tube at the solenoid end and strap them loosely in place with a tie wrap.

As you guys have been tinkering with the model for close to two decennia now; any reason nót to?

I've whipped mine off. I've just put a dirt bike tank breather on the tank pipe to close the pipe off.

I think if you unplug the solenoid it flags an EML. Other wise, I believe you are correct in that it doesn't do much.

There's lots of metal pipework that come with this that can be removed. It's all a little extra weigh. :)

Looked it up and the EVAP is checked by the ECU so best left in situ. No nee for a filter; you can just plug it at the solenoid.

I am out on a date this evening so may not be able to get it sorted and weighed but will report.

Ok, marginal gains, but still over 1 kg.

p.s. It did smell a whiff of gas so put a spring loaded one way valve in the tank vent tube. Fingers crossed it does not need too much vacuum.
