Hi All,
Just turned my MR2 into an Elise this morning - sat in traffic and P/S light comes on - bloody hell it's a heavy beast without P/S......
So it was out the traffic - stright up to Toyota garage - seems it could be the pump as it had loads of fluid in.
The Tech was very please when the light came back on, he said at least he has a definitive problem to deal with - doh !
Extended Warranty to the rescue - again !!! s8) 8) s8)
I'll keep you all informed
Mine will soon be known as the 6 Million Dollor car :-) :-) :-)
Cheers
Darren J
Surprised the steering is that heavy as there isnt much weight or tyre at the front of the car.
Well it certainly wasn't nice driving round 90 degree corners, felt very strange - I was surprised as well, didn't really feel like testing my abilities without it so trundled upto the garage and left it.
I think when the P/S light comes on it turns the pump off completely, so unfortunatly, good old muscule power is required to steer her, needless to say I was glad to drop her off :-) :-) :-)

The fast steering causes that. And I believe all the non-working PS stuff makes it even harder, compared to removing them totally.
Thanks Tem,
Well - Still waiting for parts - Easter hasn't helped, so in a lovely Yaris at the Moment.
Anyone else experienced P/S Problems - the pump just seemed to die - just like that ?!
Cheers
Darren

Mine has been acting up lately, but it only seems to die for a few seconds and then it gets back to normal. Doesn't even light any warnings, so I'm just keeping an eye on it for the moment s:? :? s:? Can't really say much more of it.
Update....................
Car now returned, looking nice and shiny :-) :-) :-)
Cost to Warranty Company - £930 fitted for new pump and Labour.....

I love getting out my Yaris back into my car - Tee, Hee..

You almost on first name terms with that yaris eh!
Very good craig :-) :-) :-)
I think I should re name this post - 6 million Dollor Car - I'm actually slowly exchanging all the warn parts for new ones, so by the end of November this year most of the car will have been replaced with new parts.... cool or what!
Think my total warranty bill for 4 1/2 years - must be about £7,000 to £8,000 doh !

Bl**dy h*ll! Mine's just gone on my 5 year old J-spec and nobody wants to touch it! They say their diagnostic equipment doesn't work on Jap spec MR2s.
Shall I disconnect the poxy thing or try and find/import the whole thing? (Just spent £400 on my wife's car today...sob)
Hywel
Hi Mate,
I'd try Adam - he seems to be able to source parts, apparetly it's not just the pump, but a ecu and other stuff, hence the cost, I asked why didn't they just do the pump, but apparently, it all comes as a complete unit. doh !
Adam - AKA Jap300
Cheers
Darren
just a note, Adam's username is Jap GT300 not Jap300
Doh ! Sorry - always getting it wrong - called him Jap GT 3000 the other day - many apologies adam.

I suppose this is getting worse, or could it be just the cold weather?
When I start the car, there's no PS. When I start driving, it stays off for like 5-10 seconds and then it suddenly comes to live. After that it's just fine for the drive and only acts up after the next start. Any ideas?
And it's always the same wait after starting to drive. It won't ever come on before moving, well, not within 2 minutes anyway.
I find mine fails if i turn the wheel too quickly after turning it on!
and yeah its a heavy car to turn.....even more like a go-kart s:twisted:  s:twisted:

I don't think I'm turning it sooner than before...but maybe the system is getting old and needs more time to wake up s:lol:  s:lol: Gotta try that, thanks s8) 8) s8)
Thanks for the help - I am taking my car to Pinewood Toyota in Coulsdon on Friday - at least they say they are happy to help - unlike the other Toyota dealer I spoke to.
I am extreemly tempted to drain the hydraulic oil and see what it's like..!

sorry to jump in on this thread, but where are you then hywel? i'm just down the road from Coulsdon, in Redhill
Hi, Stu, I live in Fetcham. (near Leatherhead)
I would've taken it somewhere closer but the chaps at the Toyota garage on the A3 (New Malden?) were not inclined to help - nor a couple of local garages. I was given the name of the parts guy at Pinewood who said he could run the diagnostics on a J-spec..
In the meantime I am driving with no PS and I have to say it is not much fun..
Hywel
i can ask Abbey Citreon for you, they use to be Abbey Toyota until a year ago and still have the rights to do warranty and servicing on our cars
All Jemca dealerships have the facilities to read J-Spec ECU's. I have had mine done a couple of times.
The PAS Unit has an ECU on the side of it. It is sold as one part and is £630 + VAT from Toyota. I've just sold a unit to someone on here and won't have anymore for another 5 weeks.

Are you levels deinately topped up. The fluid does stain the inside of the reservoir, so it does sometimes look like you have enough fluid when you dont. Also are you parking on a slope. These PAS units do seize if they are run dry.

It's parked on level, but I guess I'll have to doublecheck the fluid. I just took a quick look and it seemed ok...
Thanks for the help everyone. The car is currently at Pinewood while I drive round in one of their little red Yaris's (how does that bl**dy radio work??).
They say they reckon it's the pump but won't know for a while. I am also in touch with Ken at Japanparts who, I hope can supply that little chunk of metal for less than £630!
I have to say although this is the first problem with the car in 56,000 miles I am not impressed..

56K trouble free miles and your not impressed, thats bloody amazing in my books, mine went in at 8k for its first problem

If this were my other car, I'd be impressed by 56 trouble free miles, let alone 56 thousand s:lol:  s:lol:
I guess I had my first problem about a week after I got it (ok, it had already done 26k by that point) - front top mounts, PS hose and belt tensioner..
Alright, perhaps the wrong thing to say - I AM impressed, just a little ..peeved..
Anyway more good news - the upshot is that Pinewood tried to diagnose the unit and couldn't find any problems so they dismantled it, put it back on and it worked..! £100! Can't say fairer than that.
I asked the guy about pre-cat problems on this engine and he said he's never heard of it. So my next thought is shall I gut the cat before it guts my engine..?
