Title: Bonnet Strut - Failure of Gas Strut
Post by: roger on March 24, 2005, 18:14
I was tinkering last week-end and noticed my Front lid came up a little sideways. It transpired I had lost all the pressure in one of the struts!

I found a company in Bedford, Gas Strut Engineering and they said they could re-gas for about a fiver. Went over today, and unfortunately he couldn't get the gas to stay in. He said the piston was bent, and I am guessing that happened when I was trying to free it during the gas letting. The result appears that somehow I have knackered the inside.

The good news is that they could supply me with a replacement. It was slightly different, about 1/2" shorter so bonnett doesn't open quite as wide, and the piston is black, not chrome. The other interesting thing is that the body appears to be between 1/2 and 1 mill smaller diameter. I don't have calipers so could only check with a rule. Whilst previously the bonnet was "alright" it was about 1 mil proud of the wing - now it isn't (on the LHS at least).

I was offered a valve to reduce the pressure to requirements, but we decided to guess, he put it to 75Newtons and its just right. So sealed at that presure now.

It also has screw threads at top and bottom like the Hahn, so all the fittings work.

The cost was £20.45, inc VAT.

If anybody else gets a similar problem, their product description was 6-15-200-440-SS 75N. After I left I suddenly realised i should have asked if he could figure out the rear as well. The guy to speak to is Mike, his phone number 01234 843979.

I have no need for one now, but does he have email or other means to contact him online for us foreigners?
