Title: Drive shaft seals
Post by: Gaz mr-s on March 18, 2019, 21:58
My engine & box are coming out at a garage shortly.  I've seen mention of it being a good idea to replace seals,- presumably the diff output?  The replacement 'box has been sitting waiting for about 4 months.

Should I get new seals, & if so, where's the cheapest source?

Don't know about cheapest but when I got mine a few months back TCB had one side at half price, so I bought 2 pairs just in case [emoji23]

+1 Sensible price.

I opted for the full gasket kit intending to revive a spare gearbox. Its still on the 'to do' list while the old box and clutch grumble on :-[

5spd overhaul kit 04331-17040
6spd overhaul kit 04331-12140

I reckon they're the same as they've since both been replaced by 04331-12271.

Having said this, the sensible seal to replace while everything is apart is the crankshaft seal. This is one that can be a real pain if it leaks and its a long job getting to it.
Gearbox driveshaft seals can get mauled a bit during dismantle so no harm in doing them too. After all, these cars aren't getting any younger!
