Title: Big End knocking
Post by: Anonymous on March 27, 2005, 19:07
This is my first post, and it is not a happy one! Apologies in advance for the long entry...

A couple of weeks back I noticed a knocking sound coming from the engine, and a loss of power. I took it to MR. T and they told me it was the big end gone due to oil starvation. "That will be £3150 for a new short block, sir!" Needless to say I'm considering my options. (it's a 2000, and WAY out of warranty.) I check the oil regulary and never let drop below half, so either they are lying, or the car's suddenly developed a big appetite for oil. I've been reading this fine site for some time, so I'm aware of the pre cat failure stuff, and the symtoms sound VERY similiar. However, when I checked the precats, I found the left one was missing, and the right one was undamaged. I've had the car for 3 years without a squeak, apart from a very mild tapping at start-up that's always been there. Could it be that the cat failed before I bought it, and it's taken this long to cause the damage???

Also, they are telling me the power loss is because the air flow meter is broken, and nothing to do with the big end knocking. What are the chances of that?! My guess is that the two ARE related, and the knocking is nothing to do with the big end and has everything to do with an exhaust blockage due to the main cat failing. Any ideas how I can find out easily before forking out for a new engine?

a seconf hand engine can be yours for circa £500 so that quote is just silly.

easy way to check is drop the main cat and take a look.

Aye, reckon yer right. Only found one second-hand engine so far; £1600 fitted, although Easter Sunday is probably not the optimum time to be phoning round! Anyone used a Toyota breaker recently? Especially interested in Oxford area.

In case anyone's interested, here's a few from the MR2 owners' club website;

MR2 solutions                       0870 443 1244

Nippon Spares (East London) 0800 4588562

Anyone had any experience with any of these bad boys?

Quote from: "markiii"£125 each

Cripes, at that price it's practically worth keeping a spare in the shed 'just in case'!
