Ok, so beating the crap out of an M3 on touge was a surprise but somewhat logical.

It being thís close on a fairly high speed ráce track????
Well, and this knowing it is not at all thát tricked out  :o

But... It so is!

Custom everything.
This is what I've gathered so far...

2zz with celica final drive and 6th I believe
standalone ECU (Link I believe)
Individual throttle bodies (so loud but god it's sexy)
One-off large radiator with copper
One-off oil cooler
One-off custom suspension (very hard springs)
Carbon frunk
Carbon engine lid
Big wing
Titanium exhaust (3.5kg!!)
Custom equal length header and decat midpipe
Custom lighter brakes (Alcon 4-pot)
Stripped interior
Titanium crash bar
Titanium roll cage (half I think)
Brake bias system
Abs removal
Power steering removal
Bride seats
Polybushed everything
Light alloys

It's a hell of a machine but still.. Prob no more than 200hp tops!

Pretty sure the brakes are stock with carbon pads

Used to be.
Only thing I can't link is when this particular video was made and the spec now

Yes, well developed/sorted car but no, not all thát tricked out.
Have a look at it.
It has a not tricked out Celica engine given good breathing in and out and extra cooling capacity because of the mid engine concept.
Added lightness within the scope of track days, apart from the titanium roll cage.
Change of coil overs which quite a few on this forum have as well even if just to replace the worn OEM units.
Ditto replacement bushes.

All in all there were quite a lot more trick MR2s competing in UK competitions.
Several on this forum have gone wáy more extreme on the engine. A compressor or a turbo are already more ´trick´ than a 2ZZ swap!!

Also, I bet the performance V8 engined M3 has had a lot and I mean a lót more money in special parts put in.
The MR-S really had no business to be anywhere near as close behind a V8 M3 on a speed racing track, never mind disappear out of sight of thréé tuned GT86/BRZs.

Bottom line is that Toyota turned out quite a good car that was totally sub-appreciated by the motoring press.

Watch the video now.
What was wrong with the NSX in my world that would have been easily quickest.
Shame the s2000 broke because that was seriously fast.
Surprised the MRS and the M3 were so close on lap times.
Assume that the rest were so far behind because they never got a clear piece of track were constantly racing against one another.

Yet it was overshadowed by the two predecessors ánd the MX5.
Even if a weighed comparison with the MX5 it would happen to score more overall points, it would despite an already subjective biass by the loss of points in the subjective areas, the conclusion would inevitably in favour of the MX5.

Both Vicky and Tiff are the ´extreme´ driving journalists whom by liking the car for its nible directness say ´the same´ as their less gifted main stream writers.
Both Vicky and Tiff can drive a car fast through corners, where the SW30 shines, whereas those longing for grunt to spin the wheels found it lacking.

By getting it right for the dríving enthusisats, Toyota got it wrong for the broad public and the ´eitket drinkers´*.

Never mind the explanations though as whatever, it stays hard to understand why the two models before it where better appreciated as the SW30 is simply the best of the lot.
The video of a well balanced track perpared one being this close to a 500+ hp high revving V8 BMW M3 is imo quite surprising. I would nót have expected neither thát nor it being so far ahead of track prepared GT86/BRZs.

* Those who buy a car for the image of the badge and the numbers game.  ´Toyota´ and ´only 140 hp´ do not do it.

Btw. I find the rear cubbies ever so much more easo to use and roomy with the doors taken out.

Yes, the M3 and MR-S lap times being thát close it exactly my point. If the ´race´ would have been longer, the MR-S might very well have had the legs of the BMW.

The S2000 braking down is also very much real world no?! Though that engine is a jewel and in street form quite reliable when maintained religiously, it is not 1ZZ, 2ZZ territory.

About the rest messing eachother up, that is neutralised by the first few laps when the whole lot is having in out and the MR-S has to deal with traffic too.

Bottom line though is those lap times of the M3 and MR-s on a fairly high speed circuit. I would nót have expected that. Bóth cars are track tuned versions of the showroom one. This can be taken out of the equasion.
What then remains is a performance V8 in a factory performance car tuned for lap times on the Nordscheife vs a runabout...

Impressive performance.

Can't say the same for the direction/editing. Such a bloody annoying video to try & watch.

I missed the ENTÍRE computer game thing, period.
When Pac-Man was released as Puckman back in 1980, I had already been racing motorcycles for several years and the only embedding I have ever done has been with real life pérsons  :D

In the Spirit of this thread:
I have lightened mine a bit and it runs on AD08R shod Enkeis.
On the roads that I boúght this car for; the rural network in Andalucia, the 140 hp output has become irrelevant.
Although the surface is really quite well maintained, the roads wind through an undulating, mountainous country with a wonderful variation of cambers and crowns.
The MR is só nimble, agile and sticks só good to the road that coner speeds equal max. travel speed.  I have nó trouble driving up behind and follow ány modern high end car, however spiritedly driven*. it is amazing fun.
Passing is another thing as they will power away through a corner ofcourse even if there would be enough tarmac width.

* without charming company in the passenger seat that is: the noises from that side will drown the exhaust note and are very distracting.
