Title: Boost controller

What is the best to use or will the wastegate work on its own?
Only after low boost nothing big.

Waste gate pressure will be fine for low boost setups.
It will feel fast enough over stock, but with proper boost control running high boost its a different level of crazy fast

Agreed.

At wastegate pressure Greg squeezed 180bhp out of mine at the wheels. I didn't get to drive it like this but I imagine it was pretty mental still.

But if you want a boost controller I used a MAC 3 port solenoid. About £40 most places. Very highly rated from what I gather.

For the controller, the Apexi Avcr, despite its age, is still regarded as one of the best. Matched with the MAC solenoid Dan mentioned. Can't get much better without going standalone.

You can pick them up 2nd hand for a reasonable price

I have put a ´manual boost control´ in several of my pre-all-electronically-managed turbo diesel engined cars.
A simple adjustable valve in the pressure line to the wastegate.
A turbo pressure meter in the dash and have fun.
Oh and adjust the max of the diesel pump of course.
And turn it all back again once a year for the periodic inspection particles test....
Alas those days have gone now with the electronically controlled set parameters.

Went out this morning giving my son driving lessons on the local industrial estate (the test track :-) ) in his moms car. A modern 4x4 diesel. It has anti-fun traction control which is effectively a anti-dad drift control  >:D
There is NO WAY to do anything fun to it. The moment you try trick one sensor, you are outside the parameters of the others and the system goes into limp home at best, shut down at worst.

My son hás to learn to drive a moder stick shift car so it has to be done but I am affraid he is genetically burdened; he só much prefers his electronics-free, basically even electrics-free 35 y.o. DAF variomatic.

It's plug and play convenience means you loose the adaptability.
According to the specs all the Apexi power fcs will control boost, with the appropriate additional sensors etc.

Nope it's a standalone unit. It's not an ECU.
Its sole purpose is to control boost, but it does it rather intelligently with a heap of settings.
It was the option I was going to go for before we decided to just go for the standalone ecu

Scott is 100% right.
New PFC is 650, boost controller 200, sensors another 150, mapping 500.
....oooooorrrr 1200 for a fully custom tuned standalone with all of the above.
Bit of a no brainer.

Yeah, to be fair the specs are pretty generic for the whole range, it's not something I needed to worry about when I got the Apexi as I'll never be boosting this particular engine.

It's pretty old now (read: cheap), but I found the HKS EVC 5 an excellent method of controlling boost.

As to your question regarding wastegate pressure, it depends on the spring rating of the actuator. Different actuators can have different wastegate opening pressures, which is dependent on the rating of the spring.
There is no answer until you find the rating of your actuator/spring.

The Apexi can control Boost if you use the FC Hako and FC-Edit Software
But in all honesty if you're going boosted there are much better alternatives now

The actuator has a white spring fitted which I believe is quite low.

You're welcome to borrow my pressure tester.  Will be able to test the actuator pressure and find out the weight of the spring
I'm over near Witham so not far up the road

A white spring is something like 0.3-0.5 Bar (4.5-7PSI) depending on the brand of actuator

Thanks for that offer. The turbo is not on the car yet still collecting info.The actuator is an Arashi.

Project so far....The power fc is already running the car nicely (N/A).

That makes lie easy, we just need to connect a hose from the actuator to the pressure tester
mine looks a bit like this one but can do both positive and negative pressure

Yes but it reads both positive an negative pressure.

Just had a look at my ebay purchases and I bought the same as yours just need to find it now.
I am going to buy an AEM in cab boost gauge (not tru boost) just to keep an eye on.
