Title: Jack stands + Tranny questions
Post by: Nvy on May 5, 2019, 07:38
Hey guys,
I was wondering how one would put their car on jack stands? Id need a complete newbie guide and a list of tools that id have to purchase prior to that. Also if you can give me some links to stands that you have experience with coz nobody wants to end up dead coz their car fell on them.

Also my gearbox is whining sub 2300 rpms and on decelerating so i guess its time for a rebuild. What would be your recommendation to rebuild it or to pick up used 6 speed one? I have already asked Dean and hes asking for 450 for one and i think its a bit on the expensive side considering hes not stripping them to check their condition.

What would i need for a rebuild and how hard is it to do at home? From where can i order the required parts? I already checked some videos on youtube and it looks like a rocket science at the moment :D

Lately i dont trust anybody because im paying high bills and the problems still exist say suspension, engine and everything. Its rly frustrating so ill try to get some tools and do the things myself. Last time i paid as much as a car lift costs just to find out that my suspension is still not sorted and that was just for the working time, parts were separately bought from me.

Above is a link to the SGS trolley jack and axle stands that I have, there is also a " how to" on there.
The jack needs a block of wood at the rear end of my 2 to get sufficient height to place the axle stands on their lowest setting. At the front I now use a pre war screw jack to raise that end as the front of the car is too low to operate the pump handle of the trolley jack.It can be done, just, if used from the side of the car.
I use the Mr T recommended jack points, rear centre engine mount , no need to remove the nappy/ under tray, and front cross member, there is a drop down section of the under tray to do this.
The axle stands I've used mainly at their lowest setting as I can get under the car at that height.  To get the car higher you would need to lift the car again, blocks of wood under the jack would help.
The axle stands I place on the car sills at the jacking points My car has sat like that for up to 6 months at a time with no damage or problems noticed. I use a small piece of carpet folded double between stand and sill to protect the paintwork.

As for your transmission, maybe the £450 for an unknown/ untested used unit could be better spent on having your existing unit refurbed.
I have read on here that it has been done at home, but I do not know with what success!

Have you tried a gear oil change? it would unlikely make it worse and could be your lowest cost "fix".

Thanks,
I have found a rebuild kit on ebay for 550 $$. I think its a bit much so i guess ill try to find any transmission and will transfer my lsd in it. Also have a lightweight flywheel waiting so its okay to strip it all. I think on midshiprunabout there is a guide how to take out the tranny in your garage so ill check that one too.

Funny you wouldn't use the 'how to' section on here.....  There's one for the gearbox.
