Title: Recommendations for 'add a fuse' - which existing fuse?
Post by: Bossworld on June 3, 2019, 11:03
Got fed up of my dual USB charger killing off DAB reception.  The single charger I've got with my dash cam seems to play ball, so I'm hoping it's not bad earthing/ground in the car and it's just the adapter itself.

I've bought an 'add a fuse' and a 12v to 5v USB dual outlet.

Can anyone recommend either an unused fuse in the passenger-side fusebox, or one that's safe to add the piggy back to, that isn't the existing cigarette lighter fuse?  Thinking of using the 10A marked 'Dome'?

The adapter claims 5v @ 3A.

Also need to re-read this bookmark later https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/piggy-back-fuseholders-a-right-way-and-a-wrong-way.7524/

EDIT: For anyone finding this thread in future, by checking with a multimeter, the right side (as you look at it from outside the car) is the hot side for the Dome fuse space.

EDIT2: All wired in OK on lunch break.  Then realised the Dome fuse is a dumb idea as it's permanently live.  Need an alternative that is switched live and won't result in an accident if there's a failure (so indicators, horn etc. are out of the question).

Thanks

Went with the cigarette lighter fuse for now - figured it's the socket adaptor causing interference rather than the circuit but we'll see.

Otherwise ACC looks a good candidate.

I tried the power windows fuse but it seems that if you take out one, the other doesn't work either.

Can't remember if it's 'body ecu' or 'cabin ecu', anyway - it doesn't do much and it turns off the buzzers and cabin alerts....

Thanks Carolyn, there were a couple marked up as ECU but would need to have a look at the removable panel again. Hopefully driving in to work tomorrow so I'll see if this makes a difference.
