Title: In the year 65, 65 when comommon sense
Post by: Petrus on June 26, 2019, 11:29
was still alive...

Reading the 1965 Pat Moss/ Erik Carlsson book is both amusingly dated/historic and strikingly applicable today.

They are not mincing words either and it results in delightfully clear statements/explanations which today would be judged as politically incorrect, not acceptable. I am lóving it.

The more so because they obviously know what they are about.
Their explanitions of technology and driving technique are to the point and the simpler technology unclutters the still applicable basics.

It is also the only book about cras/driving that I have read sofar, and I have read a great many, that  explicitely deals with the blind spot of the windscreen mirror.

Also, for the older drivers among us, there are things mentioned that younger ones will not ´get´; like the plastic anti fog things on the rear window, or pop out rear windows because the C-pillars did more often than not lack rear vents.

More needed today than in their days is the emphasis on cars being highly dangerous; as lethal as landmines and that safety gadgets make them even more dangerous as the driver is lulled into a false sense of safety.

All in all a read very much worth any driver´s while.

An exmple of the gems:

Cornering
The simple and obvious truth about cornering is that good drivers do it safely and bad drivers do not.
The importance of using the right technique cannot de overstated, yet the ordinary British driving test pays no attention to it, and many people who teach driving seem to be unaware of the facts.´
