Title: Which cheap caliper rewind tool?
Post by: househead on September 10, 2019, 11:48
There seems to be a lot of these around and they don't all look at all equal!

Can anyone suggest a cheapo tool that works for our cars? Ideally screwfix, halfords or eurocarparts so I can go and grab one today.

I want to inspect the job lot when I get back from holiday a week tomorrow.

Regarding the fronts, does the piston not require any pushback or is it just that there's less pressure and it doesn't require a tool?

It has nothing to do with pressure required.  The rears spin out on a threaded rod, for the handbrake function.  The fronts will just push straight back. A G clamp will do it.

If you're not replacing pads at the rear, you shouldn't need to wind the pistons in.

I use a cheapo kit I got off Ebay for less than £20 and it works just fine.

Here's a pic of the clips for the front pads.front pad clips.jpg

A 'G-clamp' works fine for the fronts, but on some caliper designs, not so well.

I bought this many years ago and it's never let me down.

Are they 100% for the fronts? I have these clips in mine ...

Although in the case of my Drivers side front, where my issue is coming from, they don't hold the pad particularly well. It's just flopping around in there. Are the clips you posted @Carolyn meant to be used in addition to the ones pictured above?

Anyone got a photo of them fitted?

The bits that fit in the slots are the same shape.

Yes, those will do the job.

edit: my blue car has the same ones as in your pic.  They should hold the pads ok.

Wonder if I need to either replace them then or bend a few bits.

A careful application of some needle-nose pliers, I think.

Otherwise change pads.

I'll have a dabble with the pliers and see what I can come up with

I've had this for a few years which has served me well on the MR2 and Mini

It looks like the item number no longer exists but there are plenty of a similar design on ebay.

Yep definitely seen a few of those with the same design @Bossworld

Thanks to yourself and @gazza1286 for those suggestions!
