Title: Quick Release shoot out
Post by: Petrus on September 21, 2019, 00:55
Looking to change the OEM steering wheel; finding the 375mm. a tad on the larg side.
Well and since QR is all the rage I thought to look into it even though I think it is an unnecessary 500+ gram fad  :-X
Found a nice read: https://revlimiter.net/blog/2016/04/quick-release-review-1/

As to which size to change to.... ah, that is a brain cel crusher because I have taken the power steering out.
Fitting a 350mm. is hardly smaller but 6.5% heavier steering already. Hmmmm.
I´d like to go smaller still but the 12% extra effort of a 330mm is without p.a.s. more than it seems.
Taking it all the way to a 280mm, that would be 26% more effort. Ufff.

The effect of diameter on the weight is kinda funny. Whereas the force is equal to the diameter, the weight has a square root of the diameter in it, meaning that a smaller one weighs more less than the size reduction. Not that it adds up to much and the OEM hoop is only 1.4 kilo (without the explosive device)  ;D

Anyway, have a good read.

I'm on a 300mm due to my height and it's perfect for me. Not sure I'd go smaller.

Do you really need the quick release? I've just got the momo boss with an OMP wheel

Imagine without power steering ;-)  I think 330 would be my smallest limit.

Nah, QR on the road is imo a useless fad unless you nééd it to get in/out of the car. That is what it´s for in race cars too after all.
And what´s more, it is héavy.

I´d prefer a wheel/boss set from the same ad.
