Just rang up Toyota for a quote on Foxy for a full service and MOT - £340 + £55.85 for an MOT. >:(
Can anyone recommend an honest decent garage in the south/south west please?
Wow, that's steep! They probably will add VAT too.
Look for a local family run garage. Ask around your friends and see if anyone has a good story to tell. The local one I use is also used for servicing ambulances, so that made me feel happier. Also an RAC approved recovery and call out garage, not sure if that is a good thing but I also guess that if I am going to be a regular at a garage id like them to be ready to help me out of hours.

And for that you'd be lucky it they actually even changed the air filter
Why even ask them Jane?
That's not a bad deal for oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, windshield wipers, all light bulbs, vvti filter, brake fluid, brake pads, coolant, powersteering fluid, windshield washer fluid top up, a courtesy wash and MOT
Go for it!

Do I detect sarcasm in this post >:D
Now that would be a good deal Patrick - lets get a Group Buy together ;) ;D

Having a fckin laugh.
I love the "Inspect air filter *"
Notice the star! For 340 they don't even replace it as a matter of course.
In a nutshell, what this gives you for 340 is an oil change with filter, MAF clean (funny, as I was told you never need to clean it as it's "self-cleaning"), brake fluid and some screenwash.
Not even sparks.
This is an absolute disgrace.
Too right
@shnazzleBetter off DIYing it. It's actually pretty damn easy. Hardest/most annoying bit is the damn nappy!
Can be broken up too ... air filter one day, oil and oil filter next, spark plugs on another day.
Never done a brake fluid replace tho. Maybe next time.
@Chilli Girl Dear Jane
I would travel down and do it for you myself for that.
I get you might not be ar5ed to do it, but nothing there you couldn't do, if you wanted to.
J
bit of a cross post with Househead.
There's me thinking you would have done it for nothing Jase :)

@Chilli Girl - Was their quote based on the Toyota 5+Club (apparently this offers 20% off Servicing and MOT's)?
I believe there are two levels of service available - Silver (basic) or Gold (comprehensive).
A lot of the main dealers, not just Toyota, offer similar schemes that are quite often terrific value for money and usually include longer warranty periods etc. They have realised it is more cost-effective to keep their service departments busy at a competitive rate!

In the same vein as inspect air filter, they do inspect the sparks...... if you've gone to the trouble of getting them out why would you put old ones back? Ah yes it will be down profit margins as there is not much slack in £400

"Inspect hand brake "
That'll keep them busy for an hour or two.

Sadly that probably means: "pull handbrake up, check it stays there"....
Also:
IIRC don't think the screenwash is free and they will "need" to top it up even if you're brimmed it before - or maybe that's just Audi and their £10 per litre screenwash....
More worryingly (from personal experience):
1) The "inspect tyres" is apparently only one of them - either that or my old Sable (FL) had 185/55R15's all-round!
2) The "inspect brake fluid" is just "check when it was last done" - I was told I was due for new brakes and the fluid was dangerously out of date - even though I had brand new brakes and the fluid had been flushed and replaced at the same time with DOT5.1 - literally 4 days before the service.
That was the last time it went to Toyota!
Service costs for the last one I did in July:
NGK 2526 plugs - 4 x £2.16
Bosch 1987429137 Air-Filter Insert £9.59
Bosch 0986452028 Oil Filter £5.32
4-5 litres of 5W30 synthetic, your choice @ £35-£55
So less than £80 and you actually get a new air filter for your troubles...
If you wanted to push the boat out with top spec oil (e.g. one of the Fuchs Titan Race Pro), a K&N filter, etc I think you could possibly spend ~£120. Takes 2-3 hours, but most of that is having a cuppa and waiting for oil to drain - as per Carolyn's write up in the how to guide...
You might also need these bits (re-usable):
Laser 2830 Metal Band Filter Wrench £8.73
Sealey DRP07 10ltr Oil/Fluid Drain & Recycle Container, Black £20.89

Toyota do a 'value service pack' if you're going to do it yourself, for £40.
That includes air filter, oil filter, sump plug, Toyota branded spark plugs and 5l of semi synth oil. Done it the last couple of years.
I'm probably going to skip the plugs and air filter this year as I'm on less than 3k miles, so may just buy 5l of fully synth and a filter to see if it runs any better.

You could probably buy their value pack and part it out for what you're not going to use....
Personally, on much higher mileage: if money is tight, I'd rather just do a top spec synth oil and oil filter only and leave the plugs and filter for a bit longer (filter is easy to inspect and I think some of the aftermarket ones (K&N) are designed to last a few years - but they do cost a lot more)...
The main downside is that I am getting annoyed at the big Fuchs bottles with 1.3litre of 5W30 sitting around... I need to find somebody nearby who has an oil burner :)

It's a bit like coffee shop loyalty cards ... buy 3 get the 4th "free" ;)
Reference to
@BahnStormer's comment about the residue oil in a 5L container-
For several years I've used Mobil 5L Super 3000X1 5W30 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil, from Wilko at £26, but now at £30 for 5L.
My daily is a Ford diesel and I have it serviced annually by the Main Dealer that supplied it. Why? I here being asked. Not least because I get Ford/ AA recovery breakdown included in the service price.
The service interval is 12500mile on the Ford, as above it's serviced annually but I do an interim oil and filter change using the Mobil oil that is Ford spec, suitable for keeping diesel engines clean and also recommended for the 2!
So, I do home oil changes on two vehicles each year and so what is left over from one oil change gets used on the next.

When I go fully synth I'm planning on similar logic and shifting the MR2 onto Magnatec C3 5w30 as it's the same as my Mini.
