Title: Tyre storage
Post by: Ardent on November 3, 2019, 19:52
I'm probably over analysing this, but, if running 2 sets of wheels, say a summer and winter set. The set that is off the car. Is there a best way to store them?
I see laying them flat stacked on each other as most convenient, but is it any good for the tyres?
Or better to have them standing up as it where, as that is how they are designed and used?

Thoughts. Opinions.

I have no idea which is best but i store mine stacked up on their sides, takes up less room,  i also keep them in a dark place.

@mr2noob
"Huh, you're the first Brit I see using winter tires. ;-)"
To be honest I'm not. But I am considering it.

I have one of these (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tyre-Stand-Wheel-Rack-Tyre-Shelf-Wheel-Storage-Wall-4x225/262484766529?hash=item3d1d4faf41:g:rssAAOSwl8NVXizn) (or something like it) on the wall in the garage.

I will painfully whack my ?+$*ing head off the corner of it once a year but in general it's en excellent storage space for the winter wheels.

For the brief period I had two sets of wheels and tyres, one set of good rims and tyres and one set just to sit on in the winter, I fixed four brackets on the garage wall with a protruding length of studding and mounted each wheel on one stud and bolted it back to the wall/ a packer.
I sold the wheels to a Newbie on here that has not been heard of since, my lesson learned! and bought a trolley jack and four axle stands for the winter storage.

Mine are hung up on the shed wall inside little "tyre warmer" like blankets.

My summer/"winter"(all season) tyre swap goes something like this.

1. Change over tyres from summer to winter, which I'll be doing any day now.

2. Clean summer wheels using Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel - the best there is AFAIK, and worth the expense as it's easy and non-dangerous.  This is best done with wheels off car, as it's easier to get at all the knooks and crannies round the back of rim etc.  Be sure to clean sidewalls too, as you don't want brake dust and/or road salt knawing away at rubber over winter (doesn't happen on tyres fitted to vehicle being used over winter, as the combination of water, air and constant flex/movement somehow stops the degradation process that would otherwise attack a static tyre in storage).  Rinse tyres well using brush and water after cleaning so that Bilt Hamber does not attack rubber over the winter.

3. Dry summer wheels and tyres thoroughly, letting them down a bit (I think I may have left 15 psi in mine), then bag up one at a time using 80L wheelie bin bags (cheaper, more rip resistant and just all round better than bespoke wheel and tyre plastic bags).

4.  Store somewhere that never freezes (excludes many garages, sadly) and never gets madly hot either.  Mine are under the bed in the spare room (usually not heated, but maintains a steady 10-30 degrees year round).

5.  Come early April, or as soon as you dare, repeat process all over again, this time cleaning and putting away winter wheels and tyres.
