The standard Toyota locking wheel nuts were letting the side down a bit on my car. They were a dull grey compared with the chrome finish on the standard nuts and looked pretty poor.
I bought a set of these from ebay - still Thatcham approved but a much nicer finish than he Toyota ones :

little details can add that something.
Sometimes whats not there.
To finish this off I bought some new wheel nuts :

I was always a bit confused why I had a mix of different length nuts. It only dawned on me when I had all the old nuts in front of me that the rear has longer nuts than the front - these had obviously been mixed up as some point on my car.
The new ones are all the same length but I can't see any issues with that.
I replaced all the lockers on mine with standard nuts on the grounds that only another MR2 owner would want to steal a set of staggered 16" & 15" wheels.
Looks better than any locking wheel nuts out there.

Makes total sense to me. The thieves want 22" with rubber bands for tyres.
Out of interest, does anyone know what the standard lugs weigh and how it costs for lighter ones? (and any links to said lighter ones!)

I fitted
(https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Fr4AAOSwojdbR3iq/s-l1600.jpg)
which were dirt cheap and good quality steel.
Saved 32 gramms per nut compared to the OEM shouldered ones, so almost half a kilo in all.
Duralmin could have been a bit lighter but need be forged and cost a small fortune. Also, because they are longer (to fit in the gun) the weight saving is diasppointing.
Lastly, I prefer steel nuts for peace of mind.

Thanks! I had a quick look through your readers ride but couldn't find the link to them.
Could you forward the link to me please?
Done.
Please remember to only use taper nuts with aftermarket wheels and standard wheels with flat faced nuts.
If you use the wrong ones (either way) then you dont get the full metal to metal contact that they are designed for. They will torque up properly and potentially not be secure.
We dont want any wheels falling off!

Now we are doing warnings, I´d like to advise against replacing the OEM lugs with lighter ones. Preferrably also that any lock nut has the floating flat ring: The friction between steel and steel is not the same as between steel and aluminium.
Both the nuts and locking nuts I purchased are the correct flat spec with the attached washers.
I have these:
