So Oulton Park a few weeks ago and the day was going well until I came back in the pits to find this. It had only covered 3k miles as well.

wow... would I be right in saying that your backbox was previously wrapped?

It was mate yeah, from the previous owner. You reckon this is the cause?

Looks like the whole sheet of the mantle is heat cracked.
I am aware that wrapping is the thing but I don“t. Not the manifold, not anything. It adds a lot of heats stress on the wrapped bits.
Well it's not a definite, but there is a lot of correlation between people talking about cracks and having wrapped their manifolds etc..
Steve from Zero exhausts clearly laid out that it has a lot to do with the quality of the steel used.
Cobra are likely using what's financially suitable..
Nasty :( most likely because it was wrapped and used hard on track, the wrap would make it run a lot hotter than if not wrapped so it retains heat and weakens the metal, same applies to road use where it would not get anything like same heat as on track. You could speak to Cobra see what they say as you never know :D
Stamped a bit heavy at the factory maybe? Looking at the way it's blown neatly around the R I reckon it's been damaged at manufacture.
Worth a try with Cobra but second hand they'll probably say they've no control over it.
Bugger.
Ouch! Sorry to see this.
Its worth trying to check if Cobra have any warnings or advice about wrapping their systems before you contact them.
Either way, it does look like the stamping has caused a stress riser so I really hope Cobra will do the right thing by you.
Sure I've still got the receipt from previous owner. I'll give it a go...
Last I heard the warranty only sits with the first owner. Best of luck though!
Don't show them the pics of the melted bumper! They'll run a mile. I would!!! ;D
No manufacturer wants to admit to consequential damage.
Wrapped and raced... yes, must be the stamping.
Anything that's going to fail will fail on its weakest point, irrespective of treatment or use.

1. that does not make it the cause
2. the crack followed the path of least resistance; no proof it started there
Bad luck for the original poster but imo a case for not wrapping & racing a beauty product.
Never suggested it was the cause, just a weak point for potential failure and a possible issue to take up with the manufacturer.
But hey, I'm no expert...
Bottom line I see it as an inflamatory subject title.
Not a case of poor quality but of product abuse; a good example of the stresses caused by wrapping.
But hey, taking responsibility is not popular in our blame culture...

You do like to escalate don't you?
Is it plain Dutch speaking or is it something else.
Having worked with stamping machines (hot and cold) that looks like a definite manufacturing error. It's very easy to have low and high spots without really realising until after the event.
Forgive me but Cobra make performance exhausts so should be very capable of coping with higher temperatures as is the nature of their business regardless of whether it is wrapped or not!

100% something else. Being Dutch does not give you a license to be rude and an arrogant know it all.

The famous Brit humor I suppose.
Is it known how old the silencer is?
Got to be quite a few years now- I remember seeing it for sale about maybe 2 or 3 years back. It was wrapped at the time and there was a bit of issues with the sale if I remember rightly. Think the seller was Joker777 ?

It is called having a different opinion.
I thought the previous owner of my car bought it new, maybe not though. CBA pursuing Cobra. I've just fitted the OE unit. Feels a much better built exhaust and is near new condition so it'll do. Only downside its 3kg heavier.

Your opinions are valid the way in which you express them could be tempered perhaps.
You go dancing for an hour and look what happens...
Other than the blown casing does it look like there's much internal damage?
Might be cost effective to get it repaired?
I had issues with my cobra exhaust that came fitted to my MR2. I can't comment on the age or kind of use it's had, as I have no idea when the previous owner fitted it.
When I removed it, I could clearly hear the internal baffles had become detached. Once cut open, I found the baffles had rotted away completely and the wadding was non existent.
I welded in some new perforated tube and repacked it as a temporary fix and that was about 12 months ago. It still seems to be holding together, even if it does have a big ugly MIG weld on the back!

Same as mine, baffles are rattling around in there. It defo is a poor quality item no doubt. My mate had a cobra backbox on his ep3 and came away at the stamp exactly the same as mine. Just seems poor quality materials and issues in the forming is the problem. I've wrapped all my previous exhausts (Scorpion, custom, superspint, OE etc) without issue.
