Title: Strange power steering
Post by: Akayfortyseven on April 1, 2020, 20:23
Hi all,

02 PFL, have noticed recently steering is very heavy at low speed, no assistance between '10 and 2'. PAS fluid level is fine, slight whine from the pump area though. Any ideas?

Just read it may be lower UJ, it feels electronic though if that makes sense!

I'd guess UJ as well by the sounds of it but if you remove the plastic surround around the frunk, the UJ is somewhere below the power steering pump if you want to check the condition of it.

If it's all rusty, spray WD40 and clean it up with a metal wire brush or something. Lubricate it with grease or engine oil when you're done. If it's the UJ, this should be a temporary fix. If it doesn't fix the problem, then it may be something else.

Is this just when turning the wheel really fast? (e.g. a rushed 3 point turn) Mine is heavy if you do that.

Thanks guys, im going to clean the UJ, clean the PAS pump, flush the fluid. Hopefully this will sort it.

Its intermittant at the mo, but most noticeable at low speed.
