On the
@Petrus thread, Southern Belle,
@Ardent and I started to discuss things other than Southern Belle so I thought I'd start this thread to continue that discussion, rather than clog up Petrus's thread.
After my goading
@Ardent about his insistence on driving his two in the rainy season he answered :
As it was designed to be.
No where in the owners manual does it say. Under no circumstances use between october and end of march.
That aside. There is the risk of washing it during the summer. Guess where that water goes when it goes through the vents. And even more so when you lift the lid to dry the underside and engine bay. :(
Straight on to that cover. Phew!
Maybe more so for me, as I have big hole for the fan

I have the hole and not the fan ;-)
300 days of sun/year here and those remaining are not all rainy. STill better to keep any water, whether rain or rinsing, off the coils.
Still, essential as it is, it is a cheap bit of plastic and looks like that from new but ever more as the years progress.
Plastidip would do to fresheb¡n it up, as does a coat of paint. A wrap however offers more design freedom; íf you can make it stick; literally.

As marginal as it is. The version 2s sit a little flatter than the version 1.
Couple of extra ribs in the mould underneath.
The starting point woukd be that little bit better.
Still cheap plastic looking like cheap plastic and not getting better as it ages.

So that is another difference between PFL and FL?
Probably not a lot of people know that!
No idea when the revision happened.
Model specific?
Engine revision change?
No idea.

I'm glad you have " No idea" Jason, I didn't think you had an Anorak in your wardrobe.😉
PS. But that you knew about it could give me some cause for concern about your foul weather apparel status.
I'm sure I've got 2 spare covers in the garage at the moment, I'm going to have to compare them all now 🤓
Here´s one quite different from mine:

^^^That looks not the same as my one. Notice mine does not have the lip on the top. I would say the shape certainly leads to promoting rust in some areas.

I had no idea there were different ones for the mr2
Just for clarity. We are talking very minor revisions to the under side.
The top side is the same. But sits that bit flatter due to the extra ribs/bracing. Less ripple/bow.

Top side is not the same, as I discovered when getting a couple 'tarted up' for the Ding Day auction. Interestingly, I got them from Dean at Rutland and the differences weren't year related!

Interesting mystery.
I was looking at one of the spare ones yesterday and there's what looks like a date code stamped on the underside but I struggled to make head nor tail of it.

The plot thickens. I am aware of the minor variations on the underside. Yet the top side looked the same to me.
HOLD THE PHONE Having just had a closer look at those posted above. I am now thinking the variations I am thinking of might be on the top side. Doh!
Got to go and check now. Arrrggh!

indeed there is. That is what confirmed the variation. Part number difference.
Going to try and get a pic.
Might not be tonight though.
Sweet jesus.
Week x of lockdown. Sniffing part numbers on pi55 pot bits of plastic. (love it)

Right here we go. Lets hope this makes sense. Having had word with myself and gave my head a wobble. The Very minor alterations I had in mind, to the underside are not on the underside at all. Except for the different part number. (so still partly right/true)
The Variations are very much up top for all to see.
As another observation. I find the quality of the silver paint(?) on the V1 to be superior to the V2.
Pics time.

I'm sad because you haven't done a compare/contrast on the underside wadding, which is also different across the styles...
I'll let you do that one. ;)
I can only speak about the one I'm currently working on at the moment...
It would be interesting in seeing if you drop water onto the upper central area very much like where the break light wire feed lets water in and contrast it with the other version. I wonder if the water falls differently.
Quote from: Chriss on May 4, 2020, 04:11I wonder if the water falls differently.
It does:
The version without the lips only keeps the coils free and water runs off all four sides.
The ribbed one keeps the cable entry and the injector side free from run off.
Important? Dunno. It ís no doubt better at the job but;
If you have the drip tray under the vents in the lid, it will not matter much if anything.
If you don´t, having ány cover beats not having one.
The ribs are less nice looking still imo and will make a wrap even more of a pita than it already is.
For me water gets in from the break light wire grommet.

It seems so but the weather is so good recently I do not have a good opportunity to test my theory.

With the lid closed the tray has quite a steep angle to the rear. Should not be any water going towards the grommet untill you open it, causing it run to thataway.
