Title: Missing link

and they even are bóth labeled ´Roadster´!

Comparative tests galore between the MR2 and MX; MG-(T)F, Elan, Boxster even Honda S2000, Nissan 350X Peugeot 206cc and Mitsubishi Eclypse Spyder yet one between the Smart Roadster and MR2 Roadster is absent.

Still, if you look at it this is a more apt one than with the MX:
The Smart was 2003-2005 so overlapping, mid engined, comparatively priced and without much priority for luggage. In restrospect even sold about as many.

Here an overview of basic specs according to the same wiki database:

Smart/MR2
Length      3427 / 3886
Width       1656 / 1694
WheelBase   2360 / 2451
Weight       780 / 996
Output        82 / 138

Anyone have an idea why?!

Absolutely not a clue, but you're right these are very similar cars in many respects. In fact, I test drove a Smart Roadster before buying my MR2.

I love the looks of the Smart and the featherweight driving characteristics are unmatched even by the Toyota. The Smart's gearbox ultimately was the deal breaker for me though.
If ever I am a rich man, I will swap in the engine and transmission from a modern Fortwo/Twingo so I can have a manual Smart Roadster.

Me too; test drove a Brabus Coupé.
Was a bit underwhelmed really. It sits on too wide rubber on too heavy too large diameter wheels; no less than 205/40 ZR17 at the front and 225/35 ZR17 at the rear.  Imo they did not do the concept a favour.
I found the MR2 more nimble. The SMT is a world better too despite Smart´s advantage in design time.

The biggest surprise was that the MR has móre luggage space! With the cubby lids out quite a bit more even. The other roadster only has a boot behind the engine. Yes, where the exhaust gets hot and heats the boot.

My roadster is 900 kilos now and on the way to slim down more still so getting quite close to the Brabus Coupé: If all goes my way, I would get at 870 kilos ´wet´, ready to drive. A mere 30 kilos lardier than the other roadster ánd a proper cabrio.

I intend to go and have a test drive in an 80 hp roadster later in the summer, Covid19 allowing. Drive thataway and back in my own 160 hp roadster and ponder on the differences.
