Title: List of all lightweight things you can add..
Post by: jvanzyl on May 11, 2020, 15:27
Hi All,
would it be possible to consruct a list of all the lightweight things you can add to your car WITH links or enough information so that would be buyers can find the right items?

Items to replace with lightened versions:
e.g. - Item - Weight saved - Avg Cost - Link
Flywheel - xkgs - £250 - Seriously Lotus blah blah etc.
Wheel nuts  - x kgs - £50? - ebay link
Alloys wheels - xkgs - £lots - RPF01's or Desmond regamasters etc..

Items to take out cos you don't need them:
e.g. - Item - Weight saved

Just a thought really :)

Most of it is already on Belle´s thread. Soon, whén the new ones get here!, to be added is a wheel nut comparison.

Can and will make an overview of most but if you want all, then the thead it is.
There is a link to a very extensive wheel listing there too.

Furthermore there are weight reduction  lists on driftopia, spyderchat and midshiprunabout which together are extensive.

http://www.driftopia.com/2007/12/26/mr2-spyder-weight-chart-weight-reduction/
https://midshiprunabout.org/mk3/mr2-spyder-weight-chart/

Spyderchat is most informative, including ´fun´, if you do a search query on the forum.

My car is down to 900 kilos on the weighbridge accross the road, so ´wet´ ready to go.
Lightweight bonnet, rear lid are high on the whish list. Should result notable lighness and Ivo is compiling a list of interested.
Next, definitely lower on the list, is an polycarbonate windscreen. It´s not that costly in the US but shipping costs make it ludicrous.
Oh and  the a/c is 10 kg.

Does anyone know how much lighter (if any) Seibon carbon fibre hoods and engine lids are? Any noticable gain over the stock items?

Is it worth highlighting the consequences of each lightweight item?
Very light flywheel for example; more likely clutch wear and annoying in traffic.

Stock are 22 and 20 lbs according to three different US sources. Together 42 lbs. making them significant weight contributers.

The Seibon parts are said to be 7,5 and 7 lbs.

When Ivo visits his source he can ask the numbers of what they did.

If the weight is about the same, then it is a very worthwhile performance upgrade. Unlike power, adding lightness improves áll performance aspects, including braking which is also safer.

Because the bonnet and rear lid are at the far ends and rather high up, the differnce will be noticable.
If you take off the bonnet, which is 10 minutes only at most, you can féél it in your hands.
You coúld even take the car for a spin.
Take bóth off, do the same route.
Put them back and repeat.

Not going lighter flywheel because of the down sides.

Each lightweight mod is a bit too subjective perhaps apart from lighweight wheels, which I have amply explained already.

Another more clearly noticaeable one is a cat & muffler swap for a 6 kg. combo. It is so far back that it will be felt by most.

Substantially lighter bonnet/rear deck will make the car more nimble, changing directio quicker still.

That sounds like it would be a reasonable improvement. However I'd want to have them painted which would add some weight. Also the Seibon hood requires hood pins which I'm not a big fan of. Oh and then there's the price.. Will have to sell some more braces then!

Mine on the weighbridge; striving to get under 900.

Stil véry curious about what your´s puts on the readout.
Same thing others: There are several stickies about dyno runs but nóne with weighbridge result whereas weight is arguably at least as important as power. The ZZW30 head engineer certainly thought so ;-)

The hood pins btw are a USA warning thing.
If you would put a vent in the bonnet, that would keep it down too ánd offset the paint ;-)
Also there are several hood pins. The button things are quite nice imo.

Nobody does, but for balance it's important that any information on the forum is...well...balanced..

Going lightweight is great, but it's equally important to list out immediate consequences in my opinion.
@jvanzyl, your post. Just a suggestion.

Something like
Item, Avg weight saving vs stock, cost, additional benefits, downsides.
Such a table would allow people to cherry pick the areas they want to save weight on, and which ones to leave given the pros and cons.

Ok...
The lists in the links given provide a very broad basis already
Most items are free, just delete.
I´d be happy to add benefits/dowsides to what I did. Quite a few I have already mentioned in Belle´s thread, weight and effect.

How do we set it up?
Make a work in progress thread with óne person updating the overview in the topic opener?

QuoteOh and then there's the price.

It´s not for free but per example once finished a custom center console is not much cheaper than one panel. It is all relative.

Hope you sell some braces irrespectively. Dog bones ditto ;-)
We need all the goodies manufacturers we can. The MR2 is not exactly an MX concerning after market products.

I went from OEM to Fidanza (which I believe is the lightest available for 2ZZ, and I didn't really notice any downsides if I'm honest.

Someone snapped up a carbon bonnet off ebay on Sunday, by the time I got to look at it it had already gone, never even got to see the asking price.😂

That much interest yet none for the lighweight ones Ivo sorced.

I've no interest in anyone's sorcery, it was purely anecdotal on my part, there would be nothing but a cosmetic gain.
