Title: SPEC stage 2 clutch, anyone?
Post by: Bugster_MR2 on May 22, 2020, 20:31
Hi

Does anyone on this forum run a SPEC stage 2 clutch? I got one for free. PO had it on his car for 1000km before blowing up his turbo 1zz.

I am just wondering how it is for daily drive? And if the quality is good. I am not familiar with the brand SPEC.

Thx in advance.

I've no knowledge of that particular clutch but I've got an ACT competition clutch in mine and I can heartily recommend leaving it in the box...
If your car is standard and staying standard don't ruin the daily drivability of it with a beefy clutch.
They're no fun in stop start traffic around town or in jams and the car doesn't need anywhere near the grip, if you're needing a new clutch don't fit that one just because it was free.👍🏻

Can second that motion. The turbo we had had a heavy Stg2 (maybe even stg3) clutch and it was absolute hell in traffic. You had to hope for standstill traffic to be able to rest your leg

This is another area I have never grasped.

I appreciate there are many running far more juice than I can muster. But, having read the TTE turbo install document cover to cover. I cannot recall any mention or notes to installing tech. Advise customer to fit heavy clutch.
OK, only increased bhp to 178? and added 50% extra torque. But no mention of changing clutch. I have a buttery smooth stock LUK and it works just fine.

What am I missing?

Nothing Jason. Stock clutch won't last as long as it would without turbo but the TTE doesn't exactly wallop it in either.

It's for the 220ft/lb+ people that like hard launches and high torque pulls

I should add that it suits the rest of my set up and driving style better than a standard clutch probably would so I live with the trade off but as Patrick said earlier it's a blessed relief to get on the move again after some traffic.

Well, I can add to this post that my TTE turbo built by TTE i Cologne definitely has an upgraded clutch. This one has a heavier/stiffer pedal than my other stock MR2 with the OE clutch. Still good enough for daily driving.

But I am hesitant to install the SPEC on my non turbo car if it is heavier than the one TTE installed. :)

Do you happen to know what they installed?
Was the alternative clutch something they offered to do, or you asked them to do?
A TTE clutch is not mentioned in the install manual and I don't recall seeing it in the TTE options brochure.
Maybe a regional thing.
I am the 1st to readily acknowledge everyday is a school day. So any info on  a specific TTE clutch would be great.  There is a TTE thread on here that tries to round up all things TTE. So that would be another piece of the jigsaw.

TTE used the TRD updated clutch plate I believe.

As mentioned above a good standard clutch works fine with tte set up, I went for a standard 2zz clutch which was slightly updated but oem feel. But it wasn't really needed.

Oem clutch for the win :)

I believe the same, but not sure.
