Title: Timing cover + water pump help
Post by: m1tch on June 27, 2020, 12:45
Hi all,

Just fitting the front timing cover, its fairly stressful as you have about 3 minutes to get 17 bolts in of various different sizes.

Anyway, had to get some water pump bolts as I don't have any (neither donor engine had a water pump) I have followed the instructions but it looks like 1 of the bolts for the water pump are too long by 5mm.

I have torqued down the rest of the bolts so I can get the timing cover sealed as I know the water pump is a service item so can be replaced without needing to take the timing cover off again.

Put in a new front cover seal as well - can someone confirm that it looks correct - it doesn't contact the crank shaft, guessing it is there to seal the front cover when the crank pulley is in place?

Yes that's correct it seals on the pulley.

the water pump bolts are a strange mix.  I can send you one the right length, if you want to measure.

I have the diagram with the large number of bolts - made up a cardboard template of the cover when it was off and pushed them all through on that so I could just go around and drop them in. I believe that the bolt sticking out is meant to be a 35mm bolt which is slightly concerning.

Good to know that the seal is for the crank pulley rather than the crankshaft - wasn't sure as I know the rear main seal goes around the crankshaft etc.

Will get some more bolts sorted, I am going to wait for the timing cover to seal and will then pull the water pump off at the start of next week and see whats going on so at least I don't have to redo the timing cover!
