Title: Electronic exhaust cutout valve - Loud/quiet exhaust whenever you want
Post by: Ozzy on August 6, 2020, 03:24
Have had an electronic exhaust valve fitted to my car for ages now. Basically lets you make the car loud and quiet whenever you want at a touch of a button. A sort of sports mode, similar to high end modern cars. Lets you bypass silencers and whatnot, depending where you place it.

Have had people asking about the sound so recorded a vid and thought I'd post it on here for everyone incase anyone is interested and looking at getting an exhaust for theirs.

Mine's fitted just after the cat, making it a straight piped catback when the valve is open and 100% stock sound when closed. Makes a Subaru Impreza style burbly sound.

Wow, I've been holding off buying a loud exhaust because of drone and generally being too loud for a passenger. How does this work/where did you get it?

If only I had a friendly welder friend who could weld me up the exhaust I've designed that has this feature incorporated. I've the design sitting in my drawer for years now.
Your clip further justifies my design and I want it!

Perfect mix of stock calmness for motorway driving and fun with the valve open

That's pretty cool, I used to have an Apexi ECV on a Starlet that is a bit more 'old generation'.  Was controlled by a cable to open/close it.  Really handy for early morning starts and other stealth running.

Good to see technology has moved on, looks pretty trick  8)

I remember looking at these many many years ago, something I might look to run when I get a turbo on mine.

Got the 2.25" kit off ebay for around £50 and fitted it just after the cat, on the midpipe. I got the remote fob versions but can also get hardwired button/switch versions that go on the dash or something as well.

There's loads of expensive exhaust cutout valves that cost a few hundred but they're pretty much the same, so why pay more just for a branded one? I've had this fitted for a year and a half now and no problems at all. Got one on Celica Tsport as well and works fine also.

The idea and cable operated version has been around for more than a century. Even factory fitted! On early motorcycles it was even common.

On several modern gen cars it also comes OEM; the Audi TT being a very well known and relatively early modern example.

To mé it seems such a waste to carry the heavy OEM kit around ánd the system you prefer.

I knew that OEM carried these and some high end exhaust companies would fabricate an exhaust with one of these, just never realised that this is something you could feasibly do yourself on a stock exhaust that didn't come with electric cutoff.

Unless the electronics are programmed to perform an automatic action which sort of defeats the purpose, electronic / electric / mechanic is the same. The only difference is the means that actuate it. Mechanical; spring assisted push/pull manual bowden cable, has a lót going for it.

Another reason to reinstate my emanage... :)
Trigger the valve opening based on the VTEC map (valve open over X throttle and Y rpm). So, valve open when you want to blat it and quiet as a mouse when you're light on the throttle

Nice description of the thottle body :-)

Appologies for the modification.

Sounds great - Have you heatwrapped the system? My car is de-catted and de-pre-catted but doesnt pop as much as yours

Mine pops and bangs almost to an obnoxious level and it has a TTE backbox and 200 cell cat.

I dread to think what it'd be like with a straight through pipe

Wierd...is there a possibility that a Cat adds to pops and bangs? Mine does very rarely do it...but not often at all

It most definitely does.

Every car secretly does little pops but they're always nicely muffled out. The combination of Zero header, 200cat and TTE exhaust seems to make for a good few poparoonies. And I am running rich for reasons yet to be found. That won't help

Yeah my car smells stinking rich, but i have no cat at all, and still pops less than this...wierd.
I too have tte backbox, mr2 ben manifold, and some ebay brand cat  straight through section(really well made to be fair).
Car sounds great, but not many pops :( Just the occasional one and burble when revs are dropping to around 2.5k and i gently perss accelaerator

No heat wrap, stock manifold with gutted precats and main cat is still in. Mine pops and bangs like crazy, verry loud especially when hot after a spirited drive.

The backbox/silencer will muffle out alot more of the pops and bangs, than a cat will. With the valve open, it's bypassing the backbox making it into a straight pipe cat back, so it pops like mad when shifting or on overrun, especially if I tap the accelerator lol.

Each to there own but I must be getting old as that just sounds broken when the valve is open!

To me there is nothing worse than a noisy slow to rev car like this but as long as your happy :)

That's why you want the valve to open at high rpm only :)

I see a dark future for me...
