Just watching Danny Silvesters MR2 race car videos and noticed his gauge cluster does a weird thing when starting car, he says its always done it but wondered if anyone else had seen this happen, check out video below which should start just before it does it if ive copied it right, if not skip to 1:19.48 it also does it at 45:89.
Its like the old rev light setting or map select on ecutek flash on my old GT86
Mine doesnt do it, the gauge for the rpms jumps quite bad but I think its the same like the other mr2s.
my RPM guage has a mind of its own sometimes, it sits at zero then decides to work but bounces around. Then it works A1 for 4-500 miles then plays the fool again. must be a loose connection somewhere but i cant find it - even replaced dash gauage completely, same issue.
This isnt like a small jump hickup though its a half sweep and hold position for both gauges, so not a loose connection or anything like that, its similar to what a GT86 does when you key on and the needles do full sweep, also when ecutek tuned on a GT86, you move cruise stalk and rev counter moves to either 1,2 3 or 4 on dial to show the map you using which is pretty neat, obviously it wont be that on MR2 as you cant Ecutek them so interested to know what it could be.
Dont remember having a jumpy gauge even with an after market ecu interfering.
If it does some kind of sweep he'll have a standalone ecu i would think.
Its supposedly a stock ecu as per the MR2 championship rules and its definite sweep and hold as per the video, although something obviously isnt stock or working correct to do this imo. He has been down on power by looks of it as well on race videos which i though was maf related as he has buggered about with intake a lot, but this dial sweep got me wondering if there is other issues!
I dont think there are any standalone Ecus that can communicate with stock dials either other than maybe PowerFC but dont think that has a sweep feature, i know my Link G4 had sweep feature in software but couldnt communicate with stock cluster protocols so wasnt wired into it other than to control EML
My MR S does a general jump of all the gauges when I switch on. Slightly different ECU. Some people run the JDM ECU in Euro cars to get around faffing about with the immobiliser.

I wondered if JDM ecu did something different but guess its not a sweep upto 3500rpm on tacho and speedo same sort of position (as below), hold for a second then back down ?
Here is a screen shot of where needles go to for those that have issues with the video....they sweep upto this position, hold postiion for maybe a second then drop back down to work as normal.....odd!

In VAG-world it's called "gauge calibration". Make sure they work. Nonsense, it's just a gimmick for fun :) Alternatively known as "needle sweep" to make it seem more race car. You could turn it on in the car's settings via a laptop.
Guessing it's much the same on the MR-S. A nod to calibration needle sweeps and also just to make sure all gauges work before driving off?
Indeed its a nice gimmick thing ive seen on a few more modern cars now, i really like it on GT86 with its red illuminated needles looks pretty cool :D just not seen it on a stock ecu MR2 hence the post and wondering if it was normal or sign of a certain issue etc, think he needs to change to another Ecu see what happens which ive suggested.
