Don't panic yet. Most likely an o2 sensor.

The plug is (assuming right hand drive) by your right knee. It's uncovered.

Bit late for tomorrow, but a code reader/ Bluetooth dongle is your friend and torque Pro.

Get those. Read the code. And we can go from there.

Couple members up your way, that might be able to read in the meantime.

I'm free but too far away.

Definitely nothing to worry about short term

As others have said, probably nothing to worry about.  If the engine still sounds good it is likely one of the emission control items.  Almost always an O2 sensor.

Did you find the OBD socket?  Just behind the lower dash trim as explained, you might need to get your head in the footwell to see it but after that you can find it by touch.

When you get a code a whole world of advice will spring open on here......

If you are anywhere near Middlesbrough/North Yorkshire I could meet and read the codes for you.
Just let me know, have to get a new battery for my 500x tomorrow then got the day free.

Thanks to you all. No progress made. I'm feeling rough with cOvid now so I'll be locked away for a while.

Very best wishes for a swift and full recovery, hopefully the Good Samaritan @stewart@boro was not called upon.

Finally fixed my code reader which had corroded battery contacts, so beware of my mistake for leaving batteries in it. Code was po420 catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1. Reset ok but will it return??

I have the same code on mine but I am running de-cat exhaust, mine will come back on during a good run, anything from 50-100 miles

Currently having the same problem, have bunged in a can of cataclean reset the code driven about a 100miles and it hasnt reappeared. Left the emissions data in my recent thread, it just passed a test before Christmas. Will have to plan a replacement in the future.

Yes joesson I was referring to cOvid.
The exhaust I think is oe except toyosport manifold.
I did read that a sensor extension fitting may cure this as it takes the sensor out of the main gas flow and also that the sensor is too sensitive, but it's all mind boggling when you start reading about fuel trims, maf readings, vac leaks etc, I'll see how it goes in future cos I can't go out for a while yet.

Get your emissions checked mines borderline on Co with a P0420 code cat efficiency, on a recently purchased Bluetooth module it shows a cat failure - no code showing and I have reset the eml.

The O2 sensor spacer is usually used post-cat, I think in conjunction with a cat-less mid-pipe.
You don't want to remove the sensors unless essential, they're pretty fragile.

If you have the cat that came with the car when new, it is almost certainly nearing the end of its life.

Cats2u has aftermarket cats that do the job well and for a lot less dosh than OEM.

One caveat is you may also need a fitting kit to go with it.

From an environmental point of view, there's a reason we have cats and isn't simply trying to dodge the issue, tempting as it is, a tad anti-social?

I see your point and it makes sense. The article said the sensors are sensitive and easily throw up codes, so without some clever diagnostic stuff it could be a multitude of reasons. My only starting point was that it happened during many gear changes under hard acceleration.

Would eBay or buying direct be the best option and what would I expect to pay ? Thanks

I wouldn't be jumping at buying a cat just yet. I would think it would worthwhile checking the sensors performance first.  Maybe a can of Cataclean or similar through it.

If talking cats.

Either go to their website or search here.
Some very recent posts re costs.

If talking sensors. Ebay, amazon or sparkplugs.co.uk

Guys

I have exactly same symptoms the 420 its the cat, I have checked the sensors out on Carscanner they are ok, checking it out it shows a cat fault, whilst it would be wise changing the cat sensor that alone wont cure the issue. I hopping mine will pass the MOT in a couple of weeks. It has no code currently but the CO level is 28 and a fail is 30, last year it was significantly lower. Its done a 100 plus miles since I reset it and put a can of Cataclean in the fuel so hopping for another 28 reading which will pass for a short term cure. You cant argue with numbers - get the emissions checked like I did. See my post for the full breakdown on the emissions data Jan 2020 and Dec 2020.

I dont have the time to spare due to a current potentially serious health scare - due in hospital first thing Sunday morning.
