I'm interested in hearing other people's opinions and experiences on breaking a '2 vs finishing the project and selling.
The original 1zz let go on a trackday a few years ago, so I swapped a 2zz in shortly after. The project is very nearly finished, but there's still quite a few small jobs/niggles to sort out. It starts and drives, but needs a few things finishing off.
My circumstances have changed since starting the project (had kids) so I have far less spare time to get it finished and troubleshoot etc. I've kind of fell out of love with it too, and it's now a cause of stress, not joy, as it once was.
So I'm debating whether to continue and get it finished, or whether to just write off the 'sunk cost' and break it and sell the good bits.
Breaking is obviously not an easy job, but I could get a mate round one Saturday and have it pretty much stripped in a day, so that would just leave the selling. And it's got some good bits that should be fairly easy to sell.
Has anyone had the same predicament, and if so what did you do?
Not sure how easy an unfinished project would be to sell, so not really considering this option.
you never know. Why not list what you've done and what condition it's in and get some input from members.
David and I are in need of a new project, so depending on where it is and what it's like, we may be interested in buying it as an unfinished project... (possibly).
2zz with Eaton supercharger might be fun to do.
That's a fair point like, selling it as is would definitely be the easiest option.
I might put an ad in the for sale section to gauge interest, but some details for now:
-It's a 2000 PFL roadster soft top in black, and is far from perfect cosmetically but not what I'd call scruffy either.
-2zz from corolla, no service history unfortunately, but cams looked fine when I had the cover off.
-Has the original 5 speed fitted, but I do have a 6 speed box spare
-Wheels are 15" in good condition, with fairly new toyo proxys fitted (have a spare set of rims too I was going to used for track tyres)
-ECU reprogrammed by Headcase so immobiliser works (its one with a 8200 redline iirc)
-New Megillian exhuast with sports cat
-Meister r coilovers
-Braided hoses and EBC yellow stuff pads
-Dished steering wheel (have the original one still though)
-Had a new cross member fitted just before I bought it, and I have since treated some rust on the rear members/sills.
-New battery
-Starts and drives fine
Bad bits/to do list:
-It's got a hunting idle, and still have a few things to rule out/try
-Sump has small oil leak, need to take off and refit/seal
-Rear alignment needs doing
-Handbrake needs adjusting, or possibly new cables as not looked at these yet (callipers are fine)
-MOT has expired (don't think anything other than above would need sorting beforehand)
-No head unit
That's what I can think of off the top of my head. It's a difficult one, as there is still a fair bit to do.
My understanding, and I believe rightly so, is that the Club does not condone "breaking".
PS
There is a new car less member ( @Mariocross ) on here that was looking for a project, part of his problem has been location of available cars, so your location would be helpful.
PPS
@vx220 has a " wanted 2zz " ad. in the wanted section.
How much would you be looking for the car as is and where are you based?
I had the same dilemma a few years back when I needed new hard brake lines and a clutch.
Think I was already beyond the point of no return so that swung it towards ploughing on, the consensus view was where would you find as much fun for a couple of grand?
I did even more after that point, which either meant it was a sensible decision or I'm mad, but the car proved bombproof
There's plenty of threads on here with regards the best sump for a 2zz but hopefully that's a fairly cheap DIY job, handbrake similar story. Depends if you've got the time and space I suppose
Thanks for the input guys and gals.
I think I'll take some pics soon and put an ad up in the for sale section.
I do agree that breaking does feel wrong, but I just don't have time to finish this project at the moment with work, family, home improvements, and my other hobbies etc. Hopefully I can find someone who can finish and use it as to should be, not sat in my garage on a trickle charger...
For those interested I'm based in Kippax in Leeds. And I'd probably only be looking for an equivalent amount to breaking it, so around £2200.
Definitely needs the correct 6 speed box. 2zz swaps are dogs without the correct gear ratios.
If it makes you feel bad get rid unless you've got some mates to help you sort it.
Put it up for sale at 2200 and see what happens braking can be a pain anyway.
I've put an ad up in the for sale section now.
Hopefully it can find a new home.
Thanks for the input everyone.
You genuinely might be better off waiting until the spring now mate, see what gets announced at 8pm tonight but looks like none of us are going anywhere for the forseeable :/
Looks a good price/project for someone from reading the ad!
