Last night when filling up with petrol I thought I'd do a quick round of checks, as I've had it a week. I was quite surprised to see it had apparently used 1/2 a dipstick's worth of oil in the 500 miles or so that it has been driven in the last couple of weeks.
In a bit of a panic, I checked the pre-cats, but they're all present and correct, looking undamaged at 46k miles.
So, I was wondering - is this level of oil consumption typical of a Roadster? I've search back and seen a few passing comments that the engine does use oil, but nothing more than that.
Are particular grades of oil more likely to be 'used' ? I've found that old forumulation Maganatec used to be used in my oil Mk2 engine, but with Mobil1 15W50 this reduced to 1 litre every 6,000 miles.
Mine has never used any oil at all between services.
DON'T use magnatec
it gets very very thin when hot, and is crap in these engines, even using an equivelant grade plain on old semi synth will give much better oil consumption.
mine barely uses any with 15W50 but it does feel less peppy due to the heavier oil in an N/A when Turbo though it's fine.
Mine never used a drop before going turbo, and after the initial pressurisation problems it hasn't used any since, amazingly. I know a few cars here do use oil and the cats seem OK, I would suggest you keep an eye on it. Also, Magnatec is NOT recommended in these cars - search on here for more details, but it's basically far too thin after a while.
Neither of my cars have ever used oil... BUT, I have noticed that the oil takes quite a while to drain back to the sump and indicate the proper level. I always check mine in my garage about once a week before starting the engine.
Mine has just started to use oil, which concerns me somewhat, but it does say it does in the handbook. due to it lining the cylinders, and then being incinerated. Can I ask, which oil to use? i was going to get magnatec, but now im not, and should i buy branded oil, or tesco's finest. also does mixing oil brands do any harm?
Mixing oil brands, while OK should be avoided if possible. As for the brand you use, Halfords own is pretty good, and any of the branded stuff is fine, just stick to the recommended weight.
take a look at this;

I've just dug it up from Performance and moved it to maintenance as thats probably more appropriate
None in 11 months and 15k miles of driving.
Just make sure you check it when the car has been stationary for a few hours.
I was reading the handbook last night, about the oil, and it said you should check when the engine is hot, and it has been stationary for a few mins, it also said that the dip stick can give a false reading, unless the engine has been ragged to bits before you chack the level- apparently there is a lot of moisture and stuff in the oil, that only goes when the oil gets extra hot. someone should check the exact wording, as my memory is dodgy. but reading the book, checking the oil is a tricky business. btw mr t near me use shell helix 10- 30,- but the book said 10- 50 or something,- who do i listen to?
- also in the book- max speed for 1st gear is 36 mph, has anyone done this?? i wouldnt dare
To be honest I very rarely check the oil, in over two years of having the car I reckon i've checked it maybe half a dozen times and it's always got enough in.
I agree with Grant on the method of checking it though.
I too rarely check the oil, I did before taking it down to Millway for its unichip tuning and it got topped up when it was there! Its going in for a service tomorrow I am going to ask what the levels were like when I pick it up, but probably the wicked witch of Rayleigh Toyota won't know s:evil:  s:evil:
Check mine quite often always on full. Have done it cold, warm and hot and the reading always seems to be the same??
Mine is a 2000 model with 33k on the clock, uses about a litre per 1000 miles, precats are out, but I think cause its an earlier one it will use a bit of oil. Runs fine, quite happy to top up when needed.
Coming up for 40k service.
Always goes through just over half-a-dispstick worth ( technical measurement s:wink:  s:wink: ) every 10k.
