Here are two pictures of stone chips I picked up from Brunters last week:
Roof (http://freespace.virgin.net/jason.r.hunt/DSC00377_small.JPG)
Headlight (http://freespace.virgin.net/jason.r.hunt/DSC00378_small.JPG)
Headlight 2 (http://freespace.virgin.net/jason.r.hunt/DSC00379_small.JPG)
2nd headlight picture is from a different angle as the first one has shadows .
Can I get away with just using Toyota touchup paint? Or, will I need to sand them down first?
I'm a bit concerned with the one above the windscreen as it is brown. I only spotted it the day after Brunters but, it might have been done the week before Bruntingthorpe so it could be up to two weeks old now. I washed the car the weekend before and I know it wasn't there then.
The headlight one looks much worse in this picture than it looks in reality. But, it's down to the metal so I need to act fast.
Thanks
Jason
Ouch..
The ones on the headlights look nasty..
I had a similar chip on the roof though (well, mine was the A pillar) - mine also went rusty really quickly, despite only being down to the undercoat - it must be particularly thin there.
Repaired mine with the usual touch-up pens, just built it up with undercoat then applied a top coat, and you can hardly tell now.
The headlight chips might be more tricky to patch up though s:? :? s:?
Thanks.
How many pens are there?
I've just got one called 'Touch-up pencil'. Instructions say it is 'Basecoat + clear lacquer'.
Is this sufficient or are there other pens I need?
Thanks
Jason
That sounds similar to the ones I have - I used a set of Halfords pens and the Toyota paint (in the little tin) that I got with the car (since Halfords don't stock our Blue).
Basecoat should be the undercoat (grey), and the clear laquer goes on last..
Yours could be different I suppose - the basecoat on yours could be body colour..
If the spot on the roof is brown, though, you'll need to get rid of the rust first with something - the Halfords pens come with a little fibreglass 'scratcher' to get rid of it, or you could use a little bit of wet & dry, though on a tiny spot it's really hard..
I've got a wire brush on the paint 'pen'. I'll give that a go.
Cheers
Jason
Ouch indeed!
I know you said you had a couple of chips but they're ginormous! s:shock:  s:shock:
You sure that the car in front wasn't taking pot shots at you?
Hope you get them sorted.
Les
best way to stop stone chips is not hog the car, 4x4 or the truck in front of you. Hogging anyone's backend of their vehicle also gives you loads of stone chips. Especially on the motorway....
How about keeping the car in the garage s:wink:  s:wink:

Ouch - those look big. Did you collect those following the Supras? A couple had cut slicks on and their sticky tyres were throwing big stones up at me - I haven't checked for stonechips yet.
I'd put a undercoat of rustproofing stuff (kurrust?) then primer to build up the paint level, then top coat.
Thanks Ben. I'll try that.
Yes, I noticed the Supras did throw some up.
But cut slicks s:shock:  s:shock: Why s:?: :?: s:?:
None of them went above 40mph s:cry:  s:cry:

PS why did you have the hardtop on? Was it for the extra rigidity?
My '2 picked up similar stone chips. I actually used a fibreglass rust removing pen that came as part of an old Halfords touch-up set I had. Yu really must get rid of any rust and loose paint before applying new paint. Don't worry too much, just be careful and you'll be surprised at how good a result you can get with care, small brushes and a bit of patience.
