Title: Yes, here we go again!
Post by: Chilli Girl on June 30, 2021, 13:52
I'm afraid Sapphire is going to have to go up for sale again. Yesterday I took her down to Portsmouth, mainly a motorway journey and although she pulls really well and her handling is incredible, she's just too damn noisy for me. Today I jumped into an 06 plate and it was so much quieter. I'm now on hunt for a late fl :o I also can't live with her cosmetically afterall, it's just not me sadly.  I remember jonbill saying can I live with imperfection?  No, I'm afraid I can't.  It's a great car for someone but not for me.

I suppose that is the JDM 5 speed box meaning higher revs on the motorway?

Solution? Stick to the B roads and enjoy the extra acceleration!

Carolyn did warn me about the gearing and initially it didnt worry me but it's very tiring, a sign of me getting old I suppose ::)

The positive is that you still want to stay with a 2. 👍

Keep this one till you find the right replacement.
Something will always turn up :)

Are you attempting to buy every 2 ever sold in the UK at some point? Is this the hidden agenda?

Whilst you keep the current one, turn up the stereo!  I'd agree to hold onto one until a new one pops up (funds permitting).

Why is it noisy ?, if it's not a stock exhaust I have a JDM which I took off some 20 years ago and put at the back of my garage when we organised a group buy at H&S.
You may have it if you think it will be quieter.

That's very kind of you Peter.  I really don't know why it's noisy, I've never had a JDM MR-S before, I don't know much about the exhaust but I think it's more engine rev noise opposed to exhaust but then I might be wrong :-\ The car seems the quietest in top at 50/55mph than any other speed. :o

This seems bonkers to me.

Surely it's easier to just swap in a 6-Speed gearbox than to have to sell the entire car, then go on the hunt for another decent one?!

Jane is a perfectionist.
Don't think it's simply the high revs that are the problem.

It's got a standard exhaust. at 3500 rpm in top it always sounded the same as my UK PFL silver at 3500rpm in top. buy you it was 10mph slower at that.
if you want to go 75, then its getting on for 4000 rpm where they do get noisier IMO.

Try to just enjoy it Jane.
It's a nice little motor.
And if I'm honest although not cosmetically the best I will wager it is mostly rust free and mechanically sound.
Which is more than can be said for a lot of Roadsters.

Echos of, give me a well maintained, enthusiast owned loved and cherished car over a low mileage garage queen.

I can understand your frustration, mine at 70mph sits at over 4k rpm. Fully stripped too, its like someone is screaming at you from behind the seats. Long journeys are horrible, I have to wear headphones at full blast to even have a chance of sanity on arrival.

Hearhear.

And ´noise´...
With a standard exhaust it cannot be loud and a few revs more is just perception imo.
All is relative but a change in revs will take it out of any drone zone. Shift down, lift the pedal or floor it a bit more; vary.

Mý pov on imperfections is wabi-sabi. In this case sabi; nonourable proof of a useful life.
Additionally the imperfections are liberating; no heart ache about a little nick or speck.
The important thing is that it reliably runs and goes. The imperfections make that you can dáre to enjoy it; júst injoy it.

Well... as just observed all is relative.
Mine is probably at least as ´noisy´ and it does not bother me in the least as top down the wind drowns most of it and louder means I can still hear sómething more but wind.
Took all of the sound system out to enjoy the engine singing ;-)
Also I avoid highways, make the travel part of the goal. The fun in driving is after all a large part of the essence of owning this little thing.

Is your 2zz, fully braced, full poly bushed, solid engine mounts, single seat, carpets removed, custom loud exhaust, custom header, sports cat?

That just sounds horrendous ;D
Track cars and motorways aren't really compatible are they.

One thing I've realised is how much nicer my #1 car is with sound deadening on the doors. Makes a huge difference.
Has full acoustic deadening (which on total probably weighs less than 500g, so hardly going to notice it on the track). Stuck to the inside of the door.

Contemplating sound deadening myself mate, as you say its horrendous in anything longer than a quick road blast. On track is a different story as I wear ear plugs and a helmet.

Got a link the the sound deadening?

As I already wrote; all is relative: by all means you ´win´. if you need to. Congrats!
Still remains what I observe: it is not a tourer, it is not a people carrier, it is not a luggage hauler, it is not a mileage champion. Enjoy what it ís. Much like all of life. Wabi-sabi. So, have a great day; A3VT!

Once again you start something with these outlandish statements, then get all offended when I merely state facts. For a gentleman in his autumn years, you really do have a petulant side.

The crux of the matter is we all own and drive these cars to suit ourselves and our wants and needs

Jane obviously loves the 2 and if it's not doing what makes her happy then it's her choice to move it on and get one that ticks the box for her

Mine is de-cat and loud, I love the sound when it hits the sweet spot, I'm lucky as mine is a B road weekend blaster, I doubt I could tolerate it as a daily, I would certainly be looking for something more subtle

Christ I couldn't daily mine, no way! I've got a 330d M-Sport auto for the daily duties. Its a proper waft machine, polar opposite to the MR2.

If you promise to move over on the twisties I promise you will not need to sit on my rear bumper on the highway.... ;-)

@Chilli Girl  try see it as your motorbike. That too is great fun and inherently compromised transport becaúse of that. Do look up wabi-sabi and then in particular the sabi bit. Your´s has patina, ádded value :-)
