Title: Anyone recommend a supplier for a gearbox?
Post by: WWC on July 23, 2021, 12:29
Hello everybody!

Drone/whine from the gearbox believed to be bearing.

Local garage need to send it away or me to source a replacement.

Found a couple of options on eBay.

Anyone actually recommend someone they used in the past?

It's a 2003 5 speed.

TIA

Will

What have they quoted for a refurbishment?
Buying a secondhand unit is always a risk you never know how it's been treated.
God knows if you can still get new ones from Toyota. Imagine they would be prohibitively expensive.

Thanks chap, looking link £300/400 from eBay for a recon box so pretty good really.

Also a guy apparently from here selling a box too (non-recon but cheaper).

Curious if anyone has actually used a supplier and can recommend?

Thanks again.

Refurbishment of gearboxes, I suggest, is best done by a specialist, something your garage is alluding to.
PS
The problem with your supplying a refurb or unknown used box and your garage fitting it is that there is a shared responsibility. If it goes wrong what do you do?
I suggest try to find a gearbox specialist that will do the complete work and offer a warranty.
I have known this done on an auto box by a company in Birmingham.

For example a www search found:

I had my 2ZZ fitted at SJ Autosport in Brum (I noticed from another post you're not a million miles away).
I'm pretty sure Jam will give you a price to get it done (I have no idea who they use) and fit. I reused my 1ZZ gearbox on the 2zz.

I know this is going to sound obvious, but make sure you get the clutch done at the same time. It's a £250-300 job on its own!

Unfortunately I had the clutch done about 500 miles ago!

Will look up SJ Autosport now though, thanks for the steer.

J-Spec is a good quality MR2 and Celica breaker based in Ayrshire in Scotland. Andy is an ex-Toyota guy and knows his stuff - top bloke too. I bought my 2ZZ gearbox from him and it was in great order. https://www.j-spec.co.uk/
