Hi,
I bought an X reg MR2 on 30 March 2005. I have dreamt of owning an MR2 mk3 for sometime so it was a great day!
However after owning it for a couple of weeks an ugly noise would come from the nearside front disk brake on braking. It was like a horrible grating / groaning / and swishing noise.
I took it into the Toyota dealer in Stockport that I bought it from, and of course on arriving there it had stopped making the noise. However fortunately I had taken it in the day before (a Sunday) and a salesman had heard it. So they got it on the ramp and said there was nothing wrong with it. However on driving it out the car park it had started making the noise again, so their test driver came out and confirmed it, and then got it back up on the ramp. He then came back to me saying it was fixed and that it was the brake rubbing against the backplate.
Unfortunately a few days later it came back again. So I took it back in and they again came out and confirmed the noise was very strange. They got it back on the ramp and they looked at it for 15 minutes and said they could find no fault, but that it might be the suspension. Unfortunately though they said that now it had been on the ramp they couldn't tell if it was the suspension so could I bring it back when the noise started again (putting it on the ramp had stopped the noise).
On top of this the car was giving me a wierd sensation that it was "wondering" around the road slightly, and that I was having to correct it. Very slight, but very unnerving.
So anyway a few days later it started again, so I took it back in (yesterday - Sunday) and told them to keep it until it was fixed, as I didn't feel it was safe to drive. By now to be honest I was fed up of the whole thing - the car that I was so excited about now felt like an old banger. So I started mentioning that I wanted a refund. The salesman at the dealer told me he had taken on board my dissatisfaction and he would make sure the situation was remedied.
So I got a call today at 3.30pm, and the salesman told me that no fault had been found. On investigation as to what work they had actually done on it it turned out they had taken it for a short drive, and it hadn't made the noise. That's it. They said they would look at it again later in the day and ring back. We never got another call.
That is a summary of it, and to be honest there have been other examples of what is in my opinion poor service, but i've tried to summarise.
Does anyone know what this might be? Am I being unreasonable with the dealer?
Thanks,
Matthew.
A quick update on this :
They took it out today for 30 minutes, and it started making the noise. They suspect it is a wheel bearing and are going to replace it.
This has worried me slightly - was this dangerous?

Not particularly dangerous, no. The car would have gotten worse over time if left, and the steering would feel progressively worse too, but the wheel wouldn't have fallen off or anything drastic.
At least they have acknowledged the problem now and hopefully your confidence in the car will be restored soon.
