I found this little clip tonight whilst randomly snooping car videos.
Now, we don't have carburettors of course, but this video really highlights the complexity of fueling. This is on a single carb and single cylinder.
Play this against 4 direct injected ports controlled by a computer and you can start to see the complexities the ECU has to deal with inside that metal block.
- dynamics of the air and the fuel
- vibration
- temperature
- nozzle design for fuel delivery
- butterfly valve design
- balance of choke and throttle (and idle control in our case)
- fuel films within the venturi (cylinder walls and injector port walls for us)
- the sheer speed this all happens at
Etc etc.
Aside from being very interesting and beautifully filmed, it really puts into perspective in many ways how such a simple concept (4-stroke) can still bear so many complexities and parameters.
