Title: Exhaust manifold studs - advice needed
Post by: Slacey on May 12, 2005, 10:02
Guys, it appears I have managed to over-torque these puppies and have stripped the block with two of the five studs

Although there still seems to be a good seal, it's obviously not going to be perfect, so what woukld you reccomend I do?

My first thought is to helicoil them, but the thought of putting a drill near them thar holes frightens me somewhat - do you think as it's aluminium I could get away with dropping the drilling part and just retap ready for the insert?
Alternatively, does anyone have any other ideas? Is there anything I can 'glue' them permanantly in with for example?

Lastly, could someone confirm the stud size - I beleive they are M8 x 1.25mm but I'm not 100%.

TIA!

Just have a pro do it, I don't think they have any issues with it.

If the thread is gone, the only "glue" that will hold them is called welding  s:? :? s:?

Helicoiling is pretty easy. The kit will come with a drill bit only marginally larger than the existing hole, and a tap to cut the thread in once you've drilled it.

As you're only going slightly larger, its pretty hard to balls up the drilling part, The drill will follow the existing hole unless you push iti in another direction. Just remember to stop drilling when it hits the bottom of the hole! Oh, and make sure that you mask off the exhaust ports first. Tapping the thread into the aluminium should be easy, and then its just a case of inserting the helicoil and putting it all back together. If you're in doubt though, any small engineering shop will be able to do it.
