Hey guys
Had my MR2 for 3 years now having come from the world of mk2 turbo.
It's been decat pretty much that entire time, and I did the MAF mod maybe 5 months ago(injectors, spacer)
In the past week or so I've noticed it idling rather high and iratic, around 2k revs sometimes dropping down and back up again, I checked the coolant for bubbles as thought it maybe that but all seems well.
I don't drive my car super hard, mostly commuting these days, but it's no stranger to the odd red line/pop from the exhaust.
The past week(noticed the idling issue far before the next issue) I've noticed that when hitting rev limit in second gear it feels like I've hit a brick wall/fuel cut, get a very loud bang(backfires, several if I keep my foot down slightly too long) from exhaust, accompanied by quite a puff of smoke(grey).
I know how red line should feel- and it's not like hitting a brick wall/fuel cut.
I haven't even tried red lining third.
Any ideas on what could be causing that? Nothing has changed with the car itself for months apart from the mafmod(but it's ran absolutely fine since installation).
Checked for codes?

No sorry I should have said - the EML flashes up for a fraction of a second as soon as it hits fuel cut (or until I lift foot off accelerator)

Could very well be knock

Car drives absolutely fine, no unusual noises, just has suddenly developed this fuel cut on rev limit/the strange idle.
What would cause knock? Tried googling and results are all "knocking noise" related, which I don't have

"knock" is dangerous pre-detonation of the fuel/air mixture in the cylinder before it has purposely been ignited by the spark plug. Usually happens if you're running too lean, i.e. not enough fuel coming in but not exclusively.
There's a knock sensor that detects this detonation and cuts power to spare the engine. Usually accompanied with flashing dash lights.
I would check your intake and give the MAF a good clean. Make sure it's all connected well and you have no leaks. In particular after the MAF, or thr maf hole itself. Check the seal.
It's been tinkered with so that's your first check.
I'm assuming you also swapped injectors. In which case, worth checking for leaks there
But, the dash lights will also blink on big misfires,so it's not certain without logs.
I would also check your fuel pressure. It is possible you have a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter or a bad pressure regulator.

It's unusual for the EML to flash and not log a code. Are you 100% sure?
