Title: Corroded Brake Discs
Post by: Anonymous on May 17, 2005, 12:00
Hi All,

After my fantastic victory of getting a set of free Alloys from the big T even tho my '2 is out of warranty I'm moving my attentions to corroded brake discs.

I'm sure everyone has had a set go bad, has anyone got a good set of discs that don't corrode on the hub? I'm loathed to go against the stock ones 'cos they work so well, I just don't like the fact that they rust so easily...

I've also been told un-offically by one of the Toyota Service guys that they used to offer to hammerite the hub for people, but they've stopped doing that now.

Well done on the alloys.
Yes, just come back from Toyota today after a total waste of time. Left the car with them this morning. Brakes have been grinding badly the last couple of weeks and I could see that they had grooved, and thought I would give Toyota a chance to replace them.

Told them I had them replaced 6 months ago under warranty and were now grooved and corroded again. They basically told me that Toyota have changed their cover on such parts and that you do now have to buy the replacements, however short a time they have been on the car! They said they would take a look and see what they could do.

Just phoned me to say that they had had a look and nothing really wrong with the brakes and that maybe I didn't drive it enough to clean the disks of rust. F off! I drive this daily and have done for the last 2 years, I think I know my own brakes.

To have all four disks and pads replaced was going to cost me close to £400 and another day in the garage

Well if they are going to just go rusty and corrode in 4 months time what's the point. Think I will buy some other make which won't corrode so easily. Ideas welcome. I see some by C1 are sold on MRS-Passion, are these any good?

They also couldn't hear the steering knocking either, so nothing done there either. Not impressed  s:( :( s:(

Totally different story with me mate, about 2 months back I had my 20,000 mile service, they came out and told me that my brake discs are heavily corroded and my brake pads are worn down so much that it won`t make it to the next service. End result was that it was all replaced under warranty.

My dealer changed mine without even telling me, despite the fact that there was nothing wrong with the old ones.   s:shock:  s:shock:    s:? :? s:?

They definately used to replace them no quibble, had mine done at 18K like you. But this directive seems to have come in over the last month or two. I was told the pads were only 30% worn, so I asked why the disks were grooved and was told it was probably due to corrosion on the disk surface.....exactly! I think I will just drive it hard for a few days and brake a little heavier see if that smooths things out a little.   s:D :D s:D

Both Bowman and Slynx have good experience of buying brake discs and pads from http://www.speedways.co.uk

See this thread (http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6845) and this one! (http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6964)

Speedways website says that they are pattern parts and all parts either meet or exceed the recommended manufacturers specifications. Discs and pads also have an unlimited mileage 3 year waranty!

Can I just confirm that this is like a constant grinding noise.....coming from one or even two of the wheels. I have only experienced on the front left wheel. Its like a metal to metal grinding noise, gets faster as the wheel rotates quicker. It sounds like something is loose, or is just constantly spinning round and round and just touching something else......But I seem to remember it disappearing after a bit of driving, it doesn't seem to want to go!!!

I have seen that all four are heavily rusted, but on using the car this disappears. Is this normal? For some reason the noise has become more noticeable in the last few months...is this because of winter with increased frost and water etc?

Yep exactly what I experienced and resolved by replacing the front discs and pads  s:wink:  s:wink:

Could you tell me more about how you got the wheels replaced out of warranty? I tried my toyota dealership who told me no, then I tried phoning toyota directly who thought about doing it as "good will" - then phoned me back and said no too.

Also tried to get my grooved brake discs replaced under the warranty the other day but was told all they could do is offer to machine a layer off of the discs and to sand down the pads for me. Then got a phone call to say there wasnt enough metal on the discs to do so and therefore they would have to be replaced. they said the warranty doesnt cover it because its classed as wear n tear.

Richie.

I have had two replacement sets of alloys and new front discs a couple of weeks ago as they were making a constant grinding noise. I got stung £55 for the front pads and they painted the rear disc edges. I have never known Mr T reject an alloy claim on the standard 3 year warrenty cover. i'll be going in during the next couple of weeks as the six month old alloys are just starting to show the signs and my warrenty expires in six weeks  s:? :? s:?
