It looks like I've suffered some terminal internal damage in my engine. Got in the car to come home from work yesterday, started her up no probs, pulled away to hear a rattling/clonking noise. I thought it was the baffles in the exhaust at first, the car's 4 years old so it's probably due. Got home and did some more investigation and found the sound is coming from the engine not the exhaust. Erk!
Went to Mr T this morning. He looked at it and reckons the bottom end bearings have had it. He says the next step is to remove the engine and strip it to investigate but I'll probably need a new short engine - £1000 to £1500!!!
Can anyone shed and light on why this might have happened? The car is well maintained and was running fine in the morning. Mr T tried to say I must have run low on oil but I know this isn't true.
If I accept what looks enevitable and plan to replace the engine, does anyone have any suggestion of where I can get my hands on a replacement to avoid Toyota prices.
Richard
The reason for the engine failure is due to excessive wear on the crankshaft bearings. It is a Toyota fault, however you will never be able to prove it or get them to admit it.
I posted a little about it here

I have a 04 engine with 1400 miles available but it will be £1300 + £200 fitting. You may be able to get the bearings replaced with everything in situe but the cost of this is about ~£350 for parts and ~£400 Labour.

I would expect iy needs a long block if the bottom end is gone.
better to get that 04 engine at that price.
Having read around a bit it looks like I am the latest casualty of pre-cat failure. Before I do anything else I want to whip the manifold off and look to see if the cat has gone.
Are there any posts on the site describing method/tools for manifold removal?
Richard.
You don't need to remove the manifold to check the pre-cats, just pop the 02 sensors out and shine a torch down the holes: You're looking for a neat honeycomb pattern in there (although it does sound like you won't see anything at all).
