If you are going to fit one, dont get a cheap one as the threads can strip.
You can get small magnets off ebay and pop one on the outside of the standard sump plug.

Unless you have a proper lift, taking off the rear driver side wheel helps with access too.

Have a look at Oil Filter Magnets, Motion Pro is one named supplier but they are on eBay from £1.99.
Not sure if sump plugs or oil filter magnets come with a chromium finish though John, so best replace the engine under covers!

Which is what I have done. To date. Nothing on sump plug. Which is good.
@TheTigerUK Your ramps will give you more than enough clearance.
Makes me smile. A trap door for the sump plug. But still need to remove nappy for filter access.

I took that tip some years ago with a roll of dime sized neodymium magnets. Two on top of eachother and fingers crossed they don´t attract the shims from under the valve tappets ;) Their magnetic attraction is about a thousand times their own weight.
Do take care removing them as they material us véry brittle. Hence best a roll ;D

I may be cynical but having had my car "serviced" by my local Mr T on four occasions, I would observe that there is little visual evidence of the removal of the filter, whereas the cleanliness of the oil is evident from the dipstick.

Can't claim the quote about EBay magnets on the sump plug, that was from
@Topdownman. My offering was Oil Filter Magnets, that has received no comment.

After fitting one to the outside of the plug have you ever tested it to see if the magnetic force goes through the plug ?

I have a gold plug one on the V6 and will put a magnet on the new car. I have a magnet on the motorbike but that is still being serviced by the dealer so dont know if there was any debris collected on the plug.

Yes.
On my motorbike it does not work as the sump ´plug´ is the bronze cap of the gauze filter.
I tend to recall.
@Carolyn attaches her magnet to the inside end of the sump plug.
