Title: Roof rattle
Post by: steveash on May 24, 2022, 18:06
My roof has an annoying rattle from the passenger side when folded. A little pressure on the roof shuts it up until I let go then it's off again.

Anyone else experienced this and found the reason/fix?

Its not unknown, the cure is simply tighten up the catch. There's a spring clip on the hexagon that can be moved to tighten the catch.

Brilliant, thank you, I'll give that a try.

I'm confused. I can't find any adjustments on the catch. I'm talking about the one with 'Pull' on it between the seats. Have I missed something or should I just put an old towel or something in the folded roof to pad it out a bit?

If thats rattling surely the roof isn't locked down correctly.
The adjustment is on the latches that hold the roof to the windscreen. Obviously there has been some confusion here.

The wind deflectors can become loose and rattle, I imagine this would be louder with the roof down so you could check that its nice and tight?

Its not the passenger seat buckle rattling on the trim is it? (Try plugging it in to see if it stops the noise?).

Otherwise I guess its just a case of trying to move everything by hand with the roof down to see if you can find any noise from one area.

Had something similar with my roof down. It was coming from the central latch which holds the roof in place when down. You can see some rubber bits which are supposed to prevent rattling but over the years its loosened up. I glued a bit of rubber sponge material in place to prevent it rattling.

Thanks, this makes a lot of sense, the car has had a hardtop from new so has probably spent much of its life with the roof folded. I'll give it a try.

The rattle definitely comes from the roof/catch as reaching over my shoulder and pressing it down a bit stops it immediately. I expect once this major rattle is cleared up I'll notice all the other creaks and squeaks about the place!

I cut a piece of those felt carpet protector pads available in Poundland and stuck it into the centre latch area to tighten up the catch.
