Title: Rear Disc Backing Plates
Post by: Gibla on November 14, 2022, 11:20
On both of my cars, these are sub-optimal (aka badly corroded with holes in them)

I am sure I have read comments about whether to replace or simply remove + not replace......can I have some sage advice please?

£21.97 + VAT from TCB, for either handed side for genuine Toyota part

The problem with changing them is how much you have to remove to do so which makes it costly if you are paying someone.

Plenty of people just break off the bits when they lose their strength and leave it at that (myself included).

I have not noticed any problem with running without (as long as you are not worried by this!).

I believe it's possible to trim them prior to fitting so that they can be slotted in place, not sure if it's same with front and rears.

Coming back to this old thread as the NSF backing plate on mine disintegrated yesterday. Could hear something flailing round at the front and hopefully stopped before it did too much damage. The OSF looks as though it's not far behind either.
There don't appear to be any on the rear discs tho' & my invaluable exploded parts diagram suggests it should have?
Any other thoughts as to whether to replace them? What's the risk in running without the backing plates?

cut them off . they are a bitch to replace as the bolts are normally rusted in solid . i ran my car for years without them

From what I have read on here they are not an easy replacement.
My understanding is that the disc backing plate serves to " protect" the disc and thus extend the life of the disc.
So, worst case would be the disc will need replacing more frequently.
My 2002 "garage queen"  has the OE backing plates and if the records are correct the first set of after market discs and pads.

The guards may help to keep stones and grit off the pads and discs and they may help cooling of the discs.

It will be very expensive to replace them in money or time if you do the job yourself.

Many have run without them with no apparent ill effects so it is up to you which you prefer!

I trimmed my rears back to good metal and then coated them with Bilt Hamber rust treatment and paint.

The fronts on mine are still good, but as the front hubs were replaced just before I got it, the back pates may have been done at the same time. Fronts are less trouble to replace as getting the hubs off is much much less bother than the rears.

Righto, thanks gang. It's not an MOT failure, so I'm just going to live without them and hope for the best.
